We are IT Recruitment Specialists partnered with a prestigious Global Consultancy who require a Principal Engineer for one of their Public sector Clients based in Barrow (currently remote).

  • IR35 - This role is inside of IR35
  • Location: Barrow (currently remote)
  • Candidate must be Active MOD SC and UK National

Job Description:

  • The IT Systems Infrastructure - (Network Security) Principal Engineer will;
  • Be able to apply their subject matter expertise and domain experience to good systems engineering practices, to support the Engineering Manager (EM) and Delegated Technical Authority (dTA) in delivering network security solutions for defence programmes of work
  • Provide subject matter expertise and advice to other functional and capability areas to support overall project delivery and performance.
  • Have a good understanding of the principles of network security and will be able to reference the relevant maritime legislation, industry & defence standards. They will have an understanding of the customer and user needs of the product system and how this will influence and impact design activities, technical and operational performance.
  • Be able to understand and report the programme status for engineering activities, identify problem areas and implement recovery plans. This will include the management of any consequent change embodiment activities.
  • Have a working knowledge of network security, including products and suppliers and will have an understanding of the direction of potential future technologies.

Key Skills required:

  • Core Duties
  • The following activities are typical of work that may be carried out by the IT Systems Infrastructure - (Network Security) Principal Engineer,
  • Selection and implementation and test of Unidirectional Gateways.
  • Selection and implementation and test of Data Diodes.
  • Experience of cross-domain solutions in the UK defence environment.
  • Knowledge of CESG architecture patterns 4 and 14/NCSC Architecture guidance for import and export.
  • Accreditation of technical security solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance to other engineers and support the engineering management team in planning and controlling specialist activities.

Knowledge and experience;

  • Infrastructure hardware (physical rack mounted equipment).
  • Administration functions within a virtualised environment - including virtual resource management, resilience (HA & DRS), clustering and performance monitoring.
  • Orchestration tools (automation, Scripting).
  • Server operating system administration (Windows and Linux).
  • Cabling/patching (Ethernet and Fibre), cable management, clear labelling and patch diagrams.
  • Configuration and management of hardware and software based networks.
  • Network architectures and topologies.
  • Network switching, routing and Firewalls (certification experience is desirable).
  • Ability to respond to technical queries and perform troubleshooting investigations where necessary, with full root cause analysis and rectification plan creation.
  • Provide support for design reviews.
  • Experience of working under change control processes.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree or equivalent with relevant experience
  • Knowledge of network security principles in the defence, maritime or closely linked domain and have a comprehensive understanding of how their own systems and activities interact with the overall platform.
  • Knowledge of the complete engineering life cycle with some experience of working in agile teams.
  • Have a strong awareness of Product Safety and SHE.
  • Good communication skills and ability to interact with stakeholders.
