Senior Wintel Engineer - The City

Our client is embarking on a global IT Vulnerability Remediation programme of works to uplift the existing Windows Server estate to a security hardened Windows platform based on recommended security practices.

Senior Wintel Engineer to take ownership of the technical delivery of this initiative for the European segment of the business. The scope of the project will be around 800 virtual Servers hosting ~100 applications that support various discreet business units across Europe.

This is a technology focused role, so good experience and understanding of core IT concepts and technologies will be required. These should include Windows Active Directory, virtualisation, operating system upgrades, application of security standards, change management and having worked in an application delivery or project life cycle based environment.

A key requirement for this role is stakeholder management using strong influencing and negotiation skills as there are no direct line management responsibilities included. Critical stakeholders include local and US based technical teams, third party vendors/suppliers/consultants and senior management/exec level within our supported affiliate companies.

Further soft skills required for successful delivery of this role will include problem solving, time management and facilitation with a high degree of flexibility in approach.

Role Responsibilities

The critical deliverables that the Senior Wintel Engineer will be responsible for include:

  • Aid in the assessment and planning of the server/application estate including identifying any necessary remediation approaches required for each
  • The application CIS Standards (server hardening), troubleshooting and managing any defects/exceptions
  • Definition & execution of functional test plans
  • Build and maintenance of additional virtual Servers required for parallel running
  • Installation of Application, Database, Web or underlying infrastructure services software under formal change and release management processes
  • Raising and representing changes at CAB
  • Stakeholder (business application owners) engagement to support software installation, testing, defect resolution & go-live activities
  • Support with any data migrations required between parallel environments
  • Create application run-books for any application go-live
  • Ensure all operational support documentation is updated

    • Required Experience

    • Microsoft Windows Server technology for a minimum of 5 years
    • Active Directory, DNS and DHCP administration support for a minimum of 5 years
    • VMware ESX and Virtual Center virtualization technologies design for a minimum of 5 years

    Preferred Experience:

    • Scripting languages
    • Windows Systems backup and restore using various tools/utilities eg Veeam
    • Software Delivery/Unattended installation
    • Patch Management/Windows Software Update Services
    • Asset Management/CMDB
    • Knowledge of the Insurance industry applications eg RMS Risklink, Sequel Eclipse
