Description

The successful candidate will be involved in exciting new programmes over the next decade and will be involved in adapting, integrating and exploiting emerging commercial technologies for challenging environments and scenarios that include communication payloads for unmanned aircraft, hardwired/wireless (radio and 4G) communication systems for rugged land vehicles and Tactical Data Link equipment integrated on to multiple platforms for a number of projects.

As an Electronic Design Engineer, you will report to the Lead Systems Engineer and Project Design Authority as applicable.

Your responsibilities will include innovative design of technical solutions, implementation or technical subcontract management of proposed solutions including verification activities. You will also be required to undertake problem identification, diagnosing and solving.

As part of the engineering team, you will be expected to work closely with your team members across the engineering activities.

You will undertake design or review of subcontractors design, implementation and qualification activities of electronic components. You be responsible for ensuring the electronic components designed meet their requirements and ensuring the delivered product/components operate and integrate correctly at the system level.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Electronic circuit design and simulation with the appreciation of firmware requirements and limitations.
  • Subcontractor management and design review where appropriate
  • PCB layout and Gerber Data Generation.
  • Verification testing of prototype and pre-production samples.
  • Harness design and new component selection to support system design.
  • Review and integration into component design EMC and electrical safety standards
  • Accurately report on progress
  • Complete work to a high standard and to scope, quality and budget
  • Support System Integration activities

The Individual Requirements

Essential:

  • Designing components to meet stringent environmental requirements (eg extreme temperatures, vibrations, humidity, pressure) and EMC, EMI/EME, TEMPEST requirements
  • Strong communication and writing skills
  • Technical Management/liaison with Engineers/Customer/Suppliers
  • A good understanding of the complete engineering life cycle and development processes (eg requirements, design, specification, implementation, integration and testing, acceptance),
  • A good understanding configuration management
  • Minimum 6 years industry experience and preferably with a degree in a related discipline.

Desirable:

  • Engineering related tools (eg requirements management, modelling and defect reporting systems)
  • Strong experience of COTS integration and 'System of Systems' design.
  • Understanding of Design Certification and Product Safety Processes
  • Awareness of associated DEF-STANS
  • Knowledge of product approval process to meet CE, UKCA & other design certification processes/standards.
