Unix Engineer - 6 Month Contract (Outside IR35) - Hybrid (Glasgow/Edinburgh) - Starting ASAP

Day Rate: £500

Harvey Nash Public Sector client is on a journey to move from projects on-premise to products in the cloud. The Site Resilience team is one of several teams established to enable the client to deliver high quality and resilient digital products. The team is multi-functional with a strong collaborative and agile culture

Main Outcomes & Objectives:

  • Develop and strengthen automation to support disaster recovery activities
  • Support for existing UNIX infrastructure
  • Optimisation of existing and new UNIX infrastructure
  • Support and deploy PAM
  • Samba administration
  • Vmware vRealize Automation administration
  • Support and deploy Ansible Tower

Essential Skills & Experience

Significant and demonstrable commercial experience of the following:


  • RHEL 6/7/8 System administration
  • Solaris administration
  • Solaris Zone administration o Oracle VM administration using Oracle VM Manager
  • Red Hat Satellite administration o Automation


  • System configuration
  • Pipeline creation and management
  • Shell Scripting, specifically Bash and Perl
  • Ansible, including Ansible Tower deployment and administration
  • Load Balancer technologies, eg HAProxy and keepalived
  • Grafana, Nagios and InfluxDB
  • Agile working practices, including Kanban/Scrum, retrospectives, VFQ.
  • Cyber Essentials Plus methodology
  • Customer focused, through proactive engagement
  • Risk aware, focused on risk reduction and mitigation
  • Effective team working and technical decision making
  • Designing and leading infrastructure projects
  • Creativity - taking new approaches to tackle problems; embracing innovation and sharing knowledge with a range of stakeholders
  • Strong documentation skills
  • DevOps practices, including automation of infrastructure

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • General security design and architecture knowledge
  • Support of Oracle DBs on Solaris
  • Understanding Oracle SW & HW license model
  • Support of MongoDB on RHEL
  • Python
  • Hashicorp Vault, including deployment and administration
  • Hashicorp Vault Secrets Management
  • Hashicorp Vault Architectural Design and Implementation


  • Commvault


  • Ontap 9 CLI
  • MetroCluste
