The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory is seeking a Senior Combat Modelling Analyst (Land Domain) to join their team in Portsmouth.

Team: Ministry of Defence|Defence Science and Technology Laboratory|Platform Systems

Initial contracts will run for 180 working days and offer a rate up to £467/day

IR35 STATUS: Inside IR35. This engagement has been assessed by the public body as Inside IR35 legislation. Candidates would be required to operate through an umbrella company on this engagement.

This role requires Active SC (Security Check) clearance. Applicants require active SC clearance or the willingness to go through clearance before starting on site. Candidates with current clearance will be preferred. Candidates must be sole UK nationals.

Main Responsibilities

The contractor is expected to become a senior user of the ATLAS model, building on their current skills and experience with analytical combat simulations.

As part of this they will:

  • Deliver the first tranche of modelling for the Tactical Actions (TAs), which are bite-sized combat situations which commonly occur in the scenarios of interest. These will each be run with 5 generalised options to test which, if any, are effective across the TAs.
  • Management of performance data.
  • Liaison with subject matter experts and military advisors.
  • Implementation of schemes of manoeuvre.
  • Replication and debugging.
  • Analysis and presentation of results.
  • Develop best practice and user guides in use of the selected combat simulations.
  • Support the senior technical staff and technical partners in the development of new models, including supporting review and acceptance processes.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Strong experience of using analytical combat simulations is required. This could include experience of using military training simulations, although applicants should have an understanding of the difference in emphasis between the two.
  • Given the nature of the model, the role requires a methodical mind-set to approach building understanding and then continuing to build and execute the model runs.
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills are required, as well as good IT literacy skills (Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel).

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • An Operational Analysis/Operational Research mind-set and experience (as the model outputs will support further analysis).
  • A basic familiarity with Linux.
  • Aptitude for problem solving and use of separate documentation (as opposed to intuitive software or in-application prompts).
  • Experience of working with military users.
  • Awareness of complex weapon characteristics.
  • Familiarity with the Ada language and previous experience of the Wargaming Infrastructure Simulation Environment (WISE) warehouse.
  • The ability to produce visualisations/slides to illustrate schemes of manoeuvre and branching decisions.

Candidate Eligibility

Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK, this role will not offer Visa sponsorship. Tier 2 - General visas cannot be accepted. This role requires that candidates be willing to undergo BPSS (DS) Baseline Personnel Security Standard (with a Disclosure Scotland).
