Description

Working in a large enterprise development department, the System Administrator will ensure the smooth and efficient running of the development operation through the provision and maintenance of tooling which which supports the development process.

The System Administrator will provide proactive management of the toolchain used for the source control, build and deployment of a variety of business critical software products. They will regard the developers and QAs who use the tooling as customers and will manage the service where it depends on other departments, eg Network, Server Infrastructure or IT Security.

Required hard skills:

  • Experience maintaining and configuring tooling used for development, build and deployment in the Java ecosystem, ideally Jira, GitHub Enterprise, Jenkins, SVN, SonarQube & Confluence.
  • Strong Linux system administration skills.
  • Able to troubleshoot and resolve availability, performance and capacity issues for products in the toolchain.
  • Demonstrable experience in proactively monitoring and managing an estate of Servers and applications to ensure system health.
  • Strong Shell Scripting skills.
  • Good understanding of web application hosting technologies.
  • Strong understanding of the role of tools like Jira, GitHub and Jenkins in a development department and awareness of the concepts of Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery.
  • Experience working within a complex enterprise environment, understanding and respecting demarcation of responsibilities with other teams/functions.

Desirable hard skills:

  • Jira application administration - project configuration, workflow configuration, security configuration, installing plugins etc.
  • GitHub application administration - able to create users, repos, configure security etc.
  • Jenkins application administration - able to create and maintain build definitions and to troubleshoot build issues.
  • PHP Scripting to support and troubleshoot a PHP web application.
  • Demonstrable experience automating manual deployment activities to reduce effort and improve repeatability and safety.
  • System administration of applications/services running on Amazon Web Services.

Soft skills:

  • Flexible and adaptable - able to do what is necessary to ensure smooth operation of the service.
  • Able to build and exploit credible and professional working relationships to maximise own effectiveness.
  • Confident but not aggressive, respectful of others.
  • An excellent communicator.
  • Excellent ownership skills - ensuring that things get done.
  • Analytical and methodical.
  • Organised and able to maintain order under pressure.
  • Proactive and interested, a self-starter that does not require constant management.
  • Able to identify when escalation is required.
  • Flexible in ability to travel (although we aim to keep travel generally to 1 day per week or less).
