Mechanical Design Engineer (Military Vehicles)

A Mechanical Design Engineer with Military Vehicles or Automotive experience is required to work on a six-month contract (with the possibility of extension) for our Defence client based in Telford.

This is a 6-month contract with a leading UK defence company.

Overview of the Mechanical Design Engineer contract role

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will primarily be working with Heavy Armour military vehicle platforms. You will be responsible for a range of mechanical engineering activities, such as conducting concept and detailed design, stress analysis, producing drawings and other technical outputs, which will fulfil contractual requirements as well as contributing to cost-effective design.

  • Provide effective leadership of multi-disciplined teams on projects.
  • Ensure effective delivery of projects in accordance with contract technical schedule and budget requirements. Provide expert advice to internal and external clients on sustainability, energy and low carbon building designs and systems, reducing carbon footprints and energy efficient design solutions.
  • Seek & share good practice & knowledge to continuously improve own practices and remain up-to-date with relevant technology.
  • Adoption and promotion of Service Excellence culture.
  • Support team in matters of technical understanding and areas of own expertise.
  • Work within the engineering frameworks set out by engineering management.
  • Responsible for ensuring all statutory, regulatory and customer SHE policies are complied with.

Key skills required for the Mechanical Design Engineer

  • Degree/HND/HNC or equivalent qualification or experience within mechanical engineering or closely related discipline
  • Demonstrable mechanical design experience gained from a complex engineering environment, such as: oil and gas, automotive, aerospace, defence, rail etc.
  • Experience of requirements ownership and solution development
  • Design experience within an automotive environment
  • Mechanical design experience using 3D CAD software, ideally Siemens NX and Teamcenter PDM
  • Experience of conducting Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Chartered Engineer or actively working towards accreditation
