Principal Engineer - Control & Instrumentation

A Principal Engineer - Control & Instrumentation with Marine, Nuclear or Control System Design experience is required to work on a twelve-month contract (with the possibility of extension) for our defence client based in Cumbria.

This is a 12-month contract with a leading UK defence company.

Overview of the Principal Engineer - Control & Instrumentation contract role

  • Determining C&I requirements.
  • Writing of technical documentation (eg Management plans, technical specifications, System Design Descriptions, Functional Design Descriptions, etc).
  • Producing outline functional system diagrams.
  • Expression of control behaviour associated with Distributed Control Systems.
  • Prepare design calculations to demonstrate designs meet performance requirements.
  • Undertake technical development studies to verify compliance with design requirements.
  • Working across project groups to ensure designs meet the required operability, safety, security and supportability requirements.
  • Supporting the generation of schematic diagrams.
  • Equipment specification and selection and collating equipment attributes to support build model and bill of material compilation.
  • Supporting system design reviews and spatial model reviews.
  • Preparing test plans, attending equipment factory acceptance tests and reviewing test evidence and reports

Key skills required for the Principal Engineer - Control & Instrumentation

  • CEng, MIET (or be able to work towards satisfying requirements for CEng) or M Inst M & C.
  • Degree qualified
  • Experience of: Submarine, Marine, Nuclear, Defence or Instrumentation and/or control system design or manufacture.
  • An understanding of instrumentation and control system theory.
  • An understanding of electrical circuit design & associated EMC precautions.
  • Understanding of Safety Integrity Levels and BS EN 61508 or 61511.
  • Understanding of Model Based Systems Engineering principals
  • Understanding of SMART sensor technology.
  • Understanding of fieldbus technology.

The role is based in Barrow in Furness, Cumbria - commutable from Carnforth, Milnthorpe, Lancaster, Morecambe, Penrith, Workington, Whitehaven and The Lake District.
