Location: Yeovil, South West

Rate: GBP 469 UMBRELLA/GBP 373.45 PAYE (dependant on experience) In Scope of IR35

Duration: 6 months

The Role:

Engineering Managers are responsible for bringing together the technological problem-solving capability of engineering (including science and technology) and the organisational, administrative, and planning abilities of management in order to oversee complex enterprises from conception to completion.

They develop and deliver (or manage delivery of) plans to help the Customer define their technical needs and meet their technical requirements for equipment procurement, support or disposal. They may also manage enabling technical services to support projects or the Engineering Function. This includes pre-concept activity.

At a fundamental level they apply engineering theories, concepts, practices, principles and approaches and resolve technical and performance issues for a platform, product or service growing to responsibility for management of delivery of an engineering science or technology project.

The Engineering Manager role will be leading delivery of engineering aspects of a small to medium Project or Service, or a System and managing technical risk in a specific phase of the acquisition life cycle, including pre-concept.

Accountability and Responsibility

Accountable to the Delivery Manager or Lead Engineer for delivery of the engineering aspects of a small to medium delivery area. Responsible to the Lead Engineer, Chief Engineer or Engineering Manager Sub-Function for governance and assurance of the 'safe and professional' status of the area led.

General Management Key aspects:

  • Manage engineering technical requirements (definition, architecture, integration, contract assessment and management and change).
  • Conduct Planning and Review for small to medium delivery area.
  • Identify and manage engineering risk.
  • Collect, collate and evaluate technical data, review technical equipment and systems and support, and take decisions on these.
  • Provide independent perspective on innovation and technology risk in the delivery of military capability.
  • Apply DE&S policy and standards.

Role Profile

  • Lead Engineer for a project, sub-system or service.
  • Conduct of Engineering Planning or Review.
  • Identifying and managing engineering risk.
  • Requirements Engineer responsible for the development and maintenance of system requirements for a system including its in-service support.
  • Project Engineer providing support or leadership in the development and/or acceptance of a system.
  • In-Service Engineer providing support or leadership on the updating or upkeep of complex inservice equipment.
  • Disposals Engineer undertaking disposals and decommissioning of complex equipment.
  • Technical Service provider delivering enabling services in a discipline to projects or the Engineering Function.
  • Scientist or Technologist delivering projects that increase TRL/SRLs to support capability delivery to customer decision making.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Specific knowledge acquired by obtaining a technical/professional qualification and/or post graduate qualification, as well as in depth relevant work experience that might be gained from up to 5 years post qualification experience in one or more roles. This would typically be the minimum level of knowledge required to be regarded as a Subject Matter Expert (SME).

Registrations

  • Incorporated Engineering or has demonstrated equivalent knowledge, skills and experience.
  • Typically a Full member of a relevant Professional Engineering/Science Institute or equivalent body.

Qualifications

  • Typically has a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Science related area.

Experience

  • Substantial experience including operating as a manager in a complex organisation and breadth of technical experience across more than one discipline and environment.
  • Some experience of Project Management achieved externally or by z-path/secondment into the PM Function.

Knowledge

Solid knowledge and understanding of:

  • The Engineering Function structure and services and the part that the Engineering Manager Sub Function plays.
  • The DE&S business (eg purpose, strategy, standards, regulatory constraints, structure, policy, processes, procedures and tools and their intent).
  • Existing and emerging trends related to their Engineering Function area (eg market, technology, techniques, and regulatory trends).
  • DE&S Engineering processes in order to deliver work as required.
  • Systems Engineering approaches.
  • Front Line Command customers, their technical requirements and forward plan.

SPECIALIST SKILLS

Function Specific content: Tools and Techniques

  • The skills to apply Systems Thinking in a significant delivery area and the application of quality management and assurance in defence suppliers.
  • The skills to apply the ' Guide for Engineering Activities & Review' (GEAR) in a small to medium delivery area and contribute in a major delivery area.
  • Competent in the application and evaluation of Readiness Levels (TRLs and SRLs).
  • Planning skills.

Engineering Management Skills

  • The skills to manage and influence the design of a large system, component, or process to meet customer requirements within realistic constraints (such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, and sustainability).
  • The ability to help identify, formulate and solve engineering, science or technology, problems.
  • The ability to lead pre-concept technology development projects.
