Senior Mechanical Engineer

Position Description

  • Provides Mechanical engineering judgement and guidance to the Chief Engineers department to enable decisions with respect to safety and longevity of infrastructure.
  • Applies a breadth of knowledge, skills and experience of Mechanical engineering and company approaches, techniques and governance.
  • Applies experience to design & develop solutions, resolve engineering issues and problems for waterfront asset infrastructure at the Naval Base
  • Carries out and advises on Mechanical surveys and assessments reporting overall condition and developing recommendations for defects and design improvements.

Core Duties

  • Undertake Mechanical appraisals and inspections to provide direction with regards the future of the Naval Base infrastructure
  • Undertake engineering feasibility assessments, vetting and approving preliminary and final designs with justification for decision[s]
  • Assist project teams to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget and to the required quality.
  • Prepare requirement specifications, oversee and manage the work of consultants, including checking their production information.
  • Lead and assess Design Reviews and other peer review meetings as required.
  • Contribute to team planning, risk management, Quality and SHE to support the effective functioning of the Engineering Team.
  • Establish and maintain relations with Waterfront Survey and Operations and Maintenance teams.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement developing skills which improve and enhance the business capability.
  • Manage and deliver the maintenance and development of engineering processes.
  • Maintain and improve expertise and knowledge over a wide range of work areas with particular expertise in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Document engineering decisions providing governance over engineering issues relevant to their discipline.

Functional Knowledge

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Incorporated Engineer (I.Mech.E.) or equivalent experience
  • IOSH Managing Safely, knowledge of PUWER, LOLER and Safe systems of work for high risk operations.
  • Technical Understanding and knowledge of the operation of the Mechanical Waterfront assets with respect to support to ships.
  • Knowledge of safe systems of work of lifting operations and able to comment on Lift plans.
  • Understanding the Technical issues with operating and maintaining Waterfront assets in a Maritime environment
  • Auditing and incident investigation skills.
  • Preparation of reports, repair schedules, communicates using Windows, MS Word, Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of AutoCAD software.
