Mechanical Engineer 6 months Contract

Role Summary/Purpose
The successful candidate will be part of a team of engineers working on the development of new power electronics applications for power systems, particularly for HVDC converters and the forthcoming "HVDC Grid". The engineer will analyse and design HVDC converters, from converter structures to individual components. The product will be matured from concept through to manufacture and the engineer will normally be expected to support these phases of the product life cycle.

Essential Responsibilities
Mechanical development of power electronic converter modules for HVDC to meet technical and legislative requirements;
Mechanical, electrical and thermal analysis and simulation, including calculations and simulations;
Specification of key components, such as steel-work, busbars, heatsink, corona shield & insulators;
Review design documentation when required;
Carry out validations by planning design-proving tests;
Innovation on new technical ideas for patent applications;
Integration with other engineering departments for product development;
Industrialisation of the validated design by interacting with supply chain and manufacturing;
Strict adherence to standards and legislation;
Promotion and adherence to EHS policies within the team;
Potential for travel across the EU and other countries for supply chain integration 10% of the time;

Qualifications/Requirements
The candidate will typically be educated to degree level, or equivalent, in a science such as mechanical engineering. However, a proven track record and evidence that you have the experience and abilities to perform the role is acceptable.
In addition to relevant experience, candidates should be familiar with modern 3D CAD tools (Creo 4.0 or over, and Windchill PDMlink), simulation software such as Ansys, additionally they should demonstrate an ability to think innovatively and apply engineering knowledge across different disciplines.
It is also expected that applicants should have experience in industrialisation and supply-chain integration.
An enquiring mind and desire to learn new skills, an ability to apply different engineering disciplines and a willingness to share the knowledge are essential qualities. Ideally, the candidate will have a good track record of leading a team of engineers in delivering a technical project on time and according to the scope.

Advantageous:
Prior experience of the design or analysis of electrical transmission equipment;
Prior experience of design for manufacture;
Knowledge of intellectual property and the patent process experience;
Knowledge of risk management in design;
Site experience on installation, pre-commissioning and maintenance.
