Safety Manager Location: Harwell Rate: Day rate - negotiable on experience. Contract 6 months initial/IR35 determination to confirm
OVERVIEW
Safety Manager responsible for transport safety cases for the geological disposal system including Package Design Safety Reports.
The role will also extend into some other areas, including criticality and waste acceptance, radiation protection, emergency preparedness and development of operating procedures.
Ensuring that the strategy for transport safety is complete and based on a sound scientific and engineering understanding of the issues.
Acting as an Intelligent Customer for transport safety work carried by the supply chain and able to represent RWMD authoritatively in this area when engaging with regulators, stakeholders and the public.
Reporting to the Head of Disposal System Assessment you be required to closely liaise with Heads of Department, the Chief Scientific Adviser, Safety Assessment Specialists and the Nuclear Safety and Environment Committee.
External contacts include INS (International Nuclear Services, which is an NDA subsidiary company) and the supply chain, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), UK regulators (Department for Transport) and overseas waste management organisations.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS REQUIRED
Good first degree in science or engineering subject.
Chartered membership status in relevant professional institute.
Proven experience in the management of work to deliver safety cases for nuclear transport including the management of specialist contractors.
Experience of developing modelling tools.
Comprehensive knowledge of IAEA transport regulations and their application in the UK.
Proven experience of engagement with a wide range of stakeholders.
Proven ability to produce clear, concise written technical work that is appropriate for a range of audiences.
SCOPE OF JOB
Development of transport safety strategy, safety case methodologies and procedures.
Delivery of the transport safety case covering individual transport package Design Safety Reports and the overall transport system.
Defining, assessing, analysing and resolving transport safety issues relating to the Geological Disposal system.
Transport safety aspects of the Letter of Compliance assessment process.
Provision of Intelligent Client capability for all aspects of transport safety.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITES
Development of transport safety strategy, safety assessment methodologies and procedures.
Develop and maintain RWMD's strategy for transport safety, taking due account of regulatory and stakeholder issues.
Development of generic and site-specific methodologies for demonstration of nuclear and conventional transport safety.
Delivery of the transport safety case covering individual transport package Design Safety Reports and the overall transport system.
Deliver generic and site-specific transport safety assessments as required to support site identification and selection.
Provide transport safety assessments as required as input to transport system design.
Provide transport Package Design Safety Reports and the overall transport system safety case.
Defining, assessing, analysing and resolving transport safety issues relating to the operation of a geological disposal system.
Provision of safety feedback to transport system designers to facilitate continuous improvement and optimisation.
Review, agreement and sign-off of research needed in support of safety case development.
Transport safety aspects of the Letter of Compliance assessment process
Develop and maintain RWMD transport safety toolkits as required to support assessments of disposability and generic transport safety case.
Provide assessments as required as input to package disposability assessments and NDA strategic assessment as programmed.
Ensure appropriate scope and quality of output.
Provision of Intelligent Client capability for all aspects of transport safety
Manage external contracts for transport safety work, including specification of work assessment of tenders and evaluation of contractor reports.
