Network Design Engineer

Summary of the work:

The Network Design Engineer is primarily employed the network capability design and delivery engineer for networks and communications within the Architecture and Design Authority (DA) and Network Delivery Team (NDT). Leading the technical solution development and delivery directed by the Network Architect, within the schedule of NDT Project Managers (PMs).

Who the specialist will work with:

The Network Design Engineer covers activities in the ITIL Service Design, Service Transition and Continual Service Improvement areas. Key working relationships are expected between Network Delivery Team (NDT) Project Managers (PMs), Network Architect, and System Operating Authority (SOA) Network Support Engineer (NSE) team, and to contribute to plans advising on design and strategy of all Information System Networks (ISN) projects covering the whole IT and networks portfolio within the customer organisation liaising with the SOA, DA and NDT as required.

What the specialist will work on:

Expected outputs/deliverables include but not limited to:

  • Low Level Designs for network services
  • Low Level Designs for network components and IT services
  • Request for Change (RFC), technical Change Request (CR), and Implementation Plan generation in support of capability delivery
  • Work Instructions in support of capability delivery
  • Knowledge Articles in support of capability delivery
  • Test Cases in support of capability delivery
  • Review of documentation from others
  • Technical Lead transition of Network acceptance activities
  • Provide technical assistance to the operational support team during initial handover of capability delivery (early life support)

Working arrangements:

5 days a week (excluding Bank Holidays) assumed 230 working days per year
Mon to Fri 08:30 to 17:00

The contractor shall provide on-site attendance Outside of Working Hours (OWH) for the achievement of selected high priority deliverables.

Address where the work will take place:

West Midlands with monthly visits to Bristol. Travel to other locations eg London, Reading, may be necessary for stakeholder/supplier meetings.

Essential Skills:

  • MOD held DV clearance required on day 1 of the appointment and for duration of Contract.The Tenderer must provide full details as part of bid response.
  • Cisco Certified Network Professional - Routing and Switching (CCNP R&S)
  • Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP)
  • 5+ years' experience supporting complex Campus LAN & WAN networks based on IP Crypto.

Nice to have Skills:

  • Higher Education in relevant Communications and/or Information Systems subject (equivalent to Foundation or Bachelor's degree level).
  • Architectural qualifications/certifications eg TOGAFv9, MODAF.
  • Programming for Network Engineers (PRNE) (proof of course completion)
  • Cisco Network Programmability Design and Implementation Specialist (NPDESI) (proof of course completion)
  • Python Certified Entry-Level Programmer (PCEP)
  • 10+ years' experience of project engineering. Working in integrated design/architecture team.
  • Knowledge and experience of designing and implementing highly-assured IP Crypto tunnelling of network traffic across bearers of opportunity.
  • OSPF configuration and management, EIGRP, BGP, L3 TRL CATAPAN, Nexus-OS, Linux OS, QoS and DSCP marking, Policy Based Routing, logging and analysis tools (eg PRTG, Splunk, Solar Winds).
  • Dynamic multipoint virtual private network (DMVPN), Cisco networking equipment, Dell networking equipment, Juniper Firewall equipment
  • Cisco and Microsoft VoIP and video teleconferencing, RBAC administration, Software Defined Network (SDN) exposure including SD-WAN, Cisco DNAC and Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE).
