The Dounreay FCA North Programme

The Fuel Cycle Area (FCA) is a significant element of the Dounreay site decommissioning programme consisting of multiple Legacy fuel processing facilities which collectively represent one of the sites most major decommissioning challenges. The FCA-North Programme is responsible for strategy development for the critical path elements of FCA decommissioning, including planning Legacy facility decommissioning and enabling new build waste processing plant projects. The programme objective is Front End project development with the objective of identifying and actualising cost and schedule improvements against the existing site baseline.

The FCA North programme team is multidisciplinary team responsible for all aspects of project definition including requirements development, deliverables definition, supply chain oversight, contract management and design delivery. These are technically very challenging projects requiring a high degree of stakeholder engagement for successful delivery.

All roles require strong, technically minded team players, ideally bringing previous nuclear experience, a sense of humour and a can-do attitude.

A vacancy has arisen for a Project Manager supporting the FCA-North programme within the Strategic Programme Directorate. The role spans project definition gates zero through two with a predominant focus on requirements and delivery strategy development, shaping deliverables and governance arrangements, and establishing transition arrangements to the Directorate responsible for implementation. This is a challenging role for which the candidate will have, with the required support, the ability to steer future project delivery and influence successful implementation.

The Job Holder will:

  • Close liaison with stakeholder through problem definition and requirements development.
  • Evaluating established site procedures and liaising with Design Authority to ensure appropriate, and compliant, governance arrangements are in place aligned to contract deliverables.
  • Development of consultant scope of work and functional specifications for any procured design and/or development work related to the project.
  • Close liaison with procurement/commercial department in establishing a sub-contract strategy spanning works associated with definition development and that required for subsequent project implementation.
  • Supporting the delegated commercial lead in administration of the definition phase contract, leading regular contract performance reviews, responding to TQ's and EWN's, and being the single point of contact for the contract.
  • Developing a technical familiarity with the project and its challenges, liaising with stakeholders in the development of cohesive intelligent client guidance and TQ resolution throughout decommissioning plan development.
  • Liaising with DSRL Safety and Environmental leads through safety and environmental case development to ensure adequate intelligent client oversight is attained through decommissioning S&E case development.
  • Internal project performance reporting, producing monthly performance reports, working with PMO in updating and maintaining contract programme.
  • Leading project gate review preparation, production of project gate documentation, and representing the project at independent gate review.
  • Working closely with implementation project management in establishing a smooth transition into project implementation.

  • HND or Degree in Science/Engineering
  • 15 years nuclear/industrial project delivery experience, nuclear decommissioning experience would be advantageous.
  • 5 years delivering contracts of over £2m, ideally NEC contract form.

Why Join DSRL?

Dounreay has a rich tradition of innovation in Science and Engineering since the 1950's, and that continues as we decommission the facility. It is unique both in the UK and internationally as it represents the short phase of nuclear fast breeder technological development. The UK is one of the global leaders in Nuclear and the Decommissioning sector and the site is one of the most challenging in the NDA Portfolio. It has been a vital source of jobs and prosperity within the local community and the NDA are committed to assisting in helping develop future economic opportunities with local and national government leaders. The site has well established international links, particularly with Japan. We are looking for people who are qualified, motivated and want a career in the NDA. Our number one priority is Safety, and we expect our Leaders to lead by example. As part of the DSRL Team you will be expected to collaborate closely with each of the other NDA Businesses, and take a lead role within the industry.
