Role Overview

A vacancy for a Materials Laboratory Engineer has arisen within the Defence & Space team to work on space flight hardware, for Telecommunication Satellites in Portsmouth. This role reports to the Materials Laboratory Manager.

You will contribute to the Materials and Processes team mission of assuring the quality of materials and processes used in the Defence and Space products.

You will provide support to in-process testing and batch acceptance testing of procured materials.

Provide Materials Laboratory support to Projects, particularly in the area of micro-sectioning.

Support development and qualification programmes

Responsibilities

Your main tasks and responsibilities will include:

Hands-on testing of materials and processes used in the manufacture of space products, analysing results and reporting data to enable internal customers to make informed pass/fail decisions

Support Materials Engineering investigations, produce reports on the results drawing concise conclusions, and present the findings to internal/external customers

Support development and qualification programmes

Continuous maintenance/review of Material Laboratory Procedures (MLP)/Lab working Processes

Skills

We are looking for candidates with the following laboratory skills and/or experience:

  • Experience (+3 years) in preparation techniques for EEE components/PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards) and micro-sectioning experience - multilayer PCBs/EEE components & micro-section report writing.
  • Knowledge of mechanical testing/thermal cycling/materialographic inspection techniques/DPA (Destructive Physical Analysis).
  • Good knowledge of ECSS specifications for component solder mounting qualification and PCB analysis. ECSS qualified inspector certification, whilst not essential, would be a distinct advantage
  • Demonstrable team working skills, communication and presentation capability
  • Flexible and proactive approach to work and prepared to work shift patterns if needed
  • PC literate, report and specification writing, database maintenance and spreadsheets
