This specialist defence company requires an experienced Optical Design Engineer to join an existing team providing design, system integration and test support to a major IR optics based contract. 12 month contract initially, based on the south coast, Rate approx. £40-45 per hour/negotiable.

Responsibilities:
1. To undertake design activity on a major sub-system of the project involving Monochromator, wide spectral sources and IR detector equipment to create a IR characterisation bench for IR sensing systems.
2. To assist the lead engineer with integration and testing of the entire system from an optical performance perspective.
3. To provide assistance to the team in peer reviewing optics component designs (lenses, splitters etc) and assisting in quality control/auditing of suppliers.
4. Support other research/analysis activities with optics content when necessary.

Qualifications:
Degree in an engineering field

Essential Experience:
7+ years in VIS/IR optical system design, system design, component specification and test methods
Broad experience with optical components, eg mirrors, lenses, splitters, polarisers, gratings
Working to estimates/schedule

Desirable requirement:
Lens design
Military systems
Projections systems and techniques
Laser systems, Laser fibre-coupling and collection optics

Knowledge and Skills:
Practical understanding of VIS/IR optics materials and optical component design
Able to analyse and review work from other optical designers
Able to manage work to a budget and agreed timescale
Appreciation of mechanical design

Desirable requirements:
Lens design skills on a optical design package, eg Zeemax
Mechanical CAD skills
LabView or Matlab
