Deputy Group Financial Controller [Maternity cover] - 6 months cover

This role will be based in London and will include working with Group Financial Controller to prepare the Group's annual statutory plc accounts to ensure compliance with accounting regulations and to support technical accounting initiatives in the application of accounting standards and other regulations to their activities, to formulate the appropriate accounting treatment and reporting; and to produce technical position papers. Remco to support the compensation process (January 2011).

The technical accounting responsibilities are supported by two qualified accountants. The role also includes responsibility for the monthly Board pack reporting performed by the management accounting team and the monthly regulatory reporting and monitoring of regulatory capital of the group, supported by the regulatory accountant.

Responsibilities:

Group reporting
* Work with the Group Financial Controller to structure and present the Group's consolidated Annual and Interim Reports, to ensure compliance with accounting regulations, and to work with external audit on all aspects of these documents.
* Presentation and agreement, internally and with external auditors, on IFRS technical papers for new and existing technical issues, including liaison, investigation, debate and documentation as necessary. Monitoring, assessment and implementation of changes in accounting requirements which impact the business, including the monitoring of ongoing projects as they develop.
* Communicate outcome with the business and global finance team ensuring that implications are identified and understood.
* Co-ordinate regular technical training and communication of technical developments across the finance team.
* Education for the business on technical and accounting matters.
* Assess impact of strategic initiatives, ensure that accounting implications are understood eg acquisitions/disposals etc., co-ordinating with other departments (Tax, Risk, Legal) as required
* Review, overview and update consolidation issues throughout the year
* Determine and apply accounting requirements to acquisitions, new financial instruments and structures.
* Audit Committee reporting in connection with the Group annual accounts and audit process. Producing the reporting, including judgemental items relating to the reporting period; and reporting to Remco to support the compensation process (January 2011).
* Coordination with PwC re Group audit

Technical reporting processes
* Responsibility for the oversight of more technical accounting matters, ensuring the application of processes for more material or judgemental areas of the Group's reporting is in compliance with the established controls and accounting policies.

Management reporting
* Overview management of monthly management accounting for consolidation Group reporting.
* Ensure that effective coordination between corporate accounting and the management reporting team to ensure that results/forecasts are appropriately adjusted and understood
* Production of monthly reporting packs and ad hoc Group reporting as required

Regulatory accounting
* Co-ordinate the preparation of the Group regulatory capital (including large exposure) reporting.
* Provision of ad hoc technical support for regulatory capital matters.
* Solo and group FSA returns;
* Liaison with other offices re the preparation of their regulatory capital reporting and assistance with the interpretation of relevant technical issues.
* Monitor liquidity and capital of solo regulated companies and the Group.
* Monitor non UK regulatory capital requirements (in relation to regional offices)

Effective Team leadership
* Demonstrate leadership in business as usual and change processes; providing challenging team targets; inspires and motivates team to perform; and develop intellectual solutions for business issues.
* Manage a team of qualified accountants (initially 7)
* Coach, develop and mentor team members.
* Complete appraisals and competence assessments for direct reports;
* Oversee development needs of all team members.

Requirements
* Experienced qualified accountant ACA or equivalent, preferably with big 4 firm.
* Very strong practical technical accounting and experience of FTSE 100 financial reporting.
* Proficient word, excel & Powerpoint
* Ability to manage and monitor a number of projects concurrently is essential.
* Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to inspire confidence. Ability to communicate confidently and clearly through written and oral media. The ability to persuade, convince or influence others. The ability to communicate technical issues to non-accountants in as clear and concise a way as possible.
* Proven track record of analytical skills.
* Ability to apply technical situations to the business and to assess the implications and suggest solutions, where appropriate.
* A high degree of initiative and the ability to work both autonomously and in a team environment.
* Willingness to take a hands on approach
* Experience of managing teams. A strong leader, who is experienced at dealing with a variety of different people and situations.
* Needs to have the experience and ability to be able to develop a team of qualified staff.
* Ensure that in respect of all matters in your role, (including the planning and delivery of work), you understand and comply with all the company policies, practices and statements relating to risk, compliance and confidentiality. That you anticipate, identify and manage risk issues in accordance with those policies, practices and statements and escalate risk issues to the appropriate management level or committee as necessary.
