Senior UNIX/HPUX Systems Engineer

Basic Function:

The Senior Systems Engineer designs, implements, documents and maintains UNIX Systems: HPUX, RedHat/CentOS Linux and Sun Solaris virtual (VMware) and physical (HP, Sun/Oracle, Dell) Servers. The Senior Systems Engineer delivers technical expertise and prompt, accurate, consistent support of Servers, networks, and system software. The Senior System Engineer works with other teams and management to design networks, define policies and standards, meet business needs and expectations, protect information assets and provide capacity planning, disaster recovery and business continuity planning.

Principal Responsibilities, Activities and Accountabilities:

Responsibilities include:

-Design, implement, document and support internal and customer systems.
-Propose and implement system enhancements.
-Leverage technology to meet business needs, enable new opportunities, and reduce costs.
-Maintain system security and protect information assets.
-Automate repetitive tasks and processes.
-Lead through example and knowledge sharing.
-Represent the company and its customers as a prime technical contact.
-Respond promptly to resolve issues reported through problem tracking system.
-Assist management capacity and contingency planning, developing policies and standards.
-Provide third-level support and provide root cause analysis of issues.
-Provide system performance monitoring/tuning.
-Provide limited end user phone support.
-Perform scheduled and emergency maintenance.
-Rotate being on-call with other team members for 7x24 production systems support.

Requirements and Qualifications:

Education:
-College degree in Computer Science or related field preferred.

Experience:
-10 years of experience in an enterprise IT environment that includes administration, support and implementation of networked UNIX server systems.
(HPUX) -Superdome is a high-end 64-bit, Hewlett-Packard (HP) PA-8600 processor-based UNIX server designed for E-commerce customers using very large databases. Superdome is available in three configurations and comes bundled with HP's e-service software packages and customer support options. The server is set to run on HPUX 11i, HP's version of UNIX, but is intended to be compatible with Windows and Linux operating systems sometime in the future. One of Superdome's main features is the ability to be split into several partitions, each with its own operating system. Partitions defined in hardware can be further subdivided into software-based virtual partitions which allow resources, such as processor power or communication bandwidth, to be assigned to specific jobs.

Required skills and knowledge:

-Current HPUX, Red Hat Linux and Solaris.
-VMware ESX.
-System monitoring and security.
-Troubleshooting skills, problem solving and resolution (root cause identification).
-Disaster Recovery planning and implementation.
-Networking (TCP/IP) administration and security.
-DNS/DHCP.
-Scripting.
-HPUX, Red Hat Logical Volume Manager (LVM).
-Solaris zfs.
-SNMP.
-LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) administration.
-SAN technology.
