Description

The Sr. Unix Administrator ensures the effective and efficient delivery of information systems. Additional responsibilities include: install new Servers, work with file structures, manage and monitor storage and system performance, facilitate backup jobs, and support a large user community in a multi-platform, multi-location environment. Both hardware and O/S maintenance will be performed on production, development, Q/A and training Servers. This position requires a high level of organization, excellent communication skills, and the ability to prioritize projects in a dynamic environment. This person will help to provide management with the information needed to properly plan for environment growth. Development of, and adherence to policies and procedures and standards is expected. This position will report to the Manager of UNIX Systems.

JOB DUTIES

Analyze and apply applicable O/S patches.
Monitor and analyze application and system performance via OpenView.
Daily review of system logs to ID, track and report application and/or O/S issues and events.
Analyze system utilization and trending to plan for system/application/storage growth.
Creates and modifies system scripts to handle automatic processes in the system.
Assists in performing and documenting procedures for disaster recovery purposes.
Perform system maintenance and upgrades on IT maintenance weekends.
Help to formulate and document standard operating procedures.
Participate in an on-call rotation for after hours support.
Actively monitors a Remedy support queue for new tasks.
Installs and configures new hardware.
Adds users and printers to the operating system as requested by customers.
Aids in installation of applications as required by development and application teams.
Conducts monthly customer review meetings for managed systems.
Performs other duties as assigned or requested by management.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and Work experience Required/Preferred:

College education is preferred with BA or BS in computer science. Work related experience will be considered in place of a degree.
5 years experience with UNIX and or Linux required.
Excellent Verbal and Written Communication Skills are required.

Knowledge:

Knowledge of UNIX operating systems (IBM AIX, Linux, etc.) required.
Knowledge of TCP/IP and networking required.
Understanding of Storage Area Networks required.
General Knowledge of Oracle databases running on UNIX is helpful.
Experience with system and data backup procedures is desired.
Knowledge of HP Openview would be helpful.
Shell Scripting and/or Perl skills required
