A number of mechanical engineers are required to work with the defence sector, based in Cumbria on a 12 month contract basis

Full SC security clearance is required.

The mechanical engineers (air and gas systems) will be required to execute, evaluate, deliver and manage complex engineering and/or cross functional tasks or programmes of work recognising stakeholder and customer requirements & identify and implement opportunities for personal and team development to ensure that professional capability of the business and individuals are maintained and improved.

The key responsibilities for the Mechanical Engineer roles are:

  • Responsible for the production of air and gas system diagrams and technical specifications for air storage cylinders, HP compressors, reducing stations, valves etc. and in addition, produce supporting calculations and undertake design reviews to support the issue of the diagrams.
  • Support the transverse teams (safety, ILS and human factors) in producing the documentation that underpins the design.
  • Undertake design reviews and presentations to customers.
  • Liaise with internal and external customers as required, ensuring that their requirements are adequately supported and that their needs are fully considered and incorporated, where appropriate, and agreed.
  • Work with the supply chain department and equipment suppliers to deliver equipment that meets customer requirements.
  • Attend factory acceptance trials and submarine system trials and analyse trial results when required.
  • Undertake peer reviews or checking/verification tasks as directed and provide realistic programme status, identify problem areas and implement agreed recovery plans.
  • Provide support to the certificate of design activities appropriate to the discipline and articulate and present complex technical argument clearly, logically and simply.
  • Access, have a clear understanding of and apply the quality and HS&E management system documentation.

The key deliverables for the Mechanical Engineer roles are:

  • Process documentation
  • Writing technical reports.
  • Writing technical specifications.
  • Producing outline functional system diagrams.
  • Writing system safety justifications.
  • Technical presentations.
  • Calculations.
  • Modeling and analysis.
  • Developing test procedures and facilities.
  • Attending factory acceptance tests.

It is essential that the Mechanical Engineer has the following skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Background in mechanical engineering with ability to produce schematics/diagrams which show the systems functionality and the control and instrumentation requirement, based on a set of customer requirements.
  • Experience of working within submarines, shipbuilding, defence, oil and gas, automotive or building services.
  • Technical report writing skills.
  • Experience of detailed design of air and gas systems/circuits.
  • Experience of supporting the CAD integration of air and gas systems and equipment into a large product.
  • Experience of supporting production, setting to work and commissioning of air and gas systems and equipment.
  • Experience of specifying air and gas system equipment and system components, including air storage cylinders, HPA compressors, reducing stations, valves and associated equipment such as, manifolds and filters .
  • In-depth understanding of control system theory and control system design for control valve selection.

Ideally, the Mechanical Engineer should have a BEng (Hons)/MEng or equivalent. CEng, IMechE (or be able to satisfy requirements for CEng).
