Role Purpose

The Design of Group Technology networks, platforms and solutions. This includes specification, RFPs to vendors, evaluation of vendor responses, migration plans, configuration data-build, capacity management and 3rd level design support throughout life cycle.

Nature and Scope

  • Technology solutions are critical to the client's performance. Design Engineers are central to the implementation and support of those solutions. The role purpose is the design, dimensioning, test specification, documentation and maintenance of new and amended networks, platforms, services and related systems. The design specifications will be carried out in accordance with agreed international standards, and strategic policies.
  • The quality, operational efficiency, usability and cost of ownership of the resulting solutions are key indicators of success.
  • Projects may involve the sourcing of solutions from third party suppliers.
  • It is important that design engineers continue to develop their skills, their understanding of best practice; and their knowledge of methods, technologies and products in the telecommunications industry.
  • Established design engineer, responsible for developing optimum designs within their domain and on more complex solutions lead a design team

Role Specific Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of best practice in network and service development process.
  • Proven ability to liaise with Architecture and vendor community in developing solution options
  • Substantial experience building carrier class applications
  • Good knowledge of fixed and mobile voice network technologies, architectures, platforms and protocols.
  • Excellent detailed knowledge of a selection of these platforms
    including:
    • Deep knowledge of the SIP protocol
    • Very Good knowledge of relevant network protocols/standards (ITU/ETSI/IETF etc)
    • Good knowledge of business IP-PBXs (Avaya, Cisco CallManager) Acme Packet SBC, configuration and troubleshooting
    • Good knowledge of the IMS architecture and standards
    • Good knowledge of IP Networks - design, implementation and troubleshooting
    • Knowledge of Legacy voice technologies (
  • Knowledge and experience of project management tools and techniques.
  • Familiar with Quality processes and their practical implementation
  • Design, build and test and deploy network/application components.
  • Writing Technical Service Descriptions, Functional Specifications and other development process-based documentation.
  • Ensuring delivery targets are met on time, to budget, and meet applicable quality criteria.
  • Proven ability to identify root causes to problems and find creative solutions
  • Relentless focus on consolidation and elimination of duplication
