Description

To lead EMC Engineering activities within the Electronic Design Centre of a large Aerospace manufacturer based in Cheltenham, supporting Power and Avionic Systems projects, from early design concept through to qualification.

The EMC Engineer will be available to coach Engineers of all levels, and provide consultancy to other departments, in all aspects of aerospace EMC including lightning protection.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • The EMC Engineer will work with Hardware Systems Engineers and Product Designers to define effective design strategies. Risks related with EMC performance and lightning protection will be identified, and routes defined to mitigate them. As EMC is a system problem, the right candidate will be able to work effectively with other engineers of various disciplines and at all levels to ensure design strategies are implemented effectively.
  • Where improvement ideas are identified which can be applied across product groups, the EMC Engineer will be able to develop and influence design techniques, procedures and practices.
  • The EMC Engineer will be available to support the development of qualification test plans, test procedures and development and qualification test reports, working in conjunction with qualification test teams and qualification support engineers. The Engineer must be able to define test strategies, to ensure products are tested in a manner that meets our customers' needs, with robust and practical test systems.
  • The EMC Engineer will define and lead development test activities, and will have the ability to investigate performance issues from a systems to a circuit and component level. With experience of engineering development, the right candidate will be able to identify practical and cost effective solutions, where design changes are necessary.
  • An important part of this role is to understand and derive customer requirements, based on numerous aerospace standards, including DO-160, MIL-STD, DEF-STAN and customer owned specifications from Boeing and Airbus. The EMC Engineer will be able to advise on test methods and procedures to support customers, project teams and teams involved with bids and proposals.
  • To support departments dealing with design changes, the Engineer will be able to provide technical leadership to aid customer assessments and engineering investigations.
  • As a member of the Specialist Group, within Electronic Design, the EMC Engineer will undertake tasks to cost and schedule, and will provide regular feedback and status reports to the Group Manager.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A degree or equivalent level of knowledge or experience in Electronic Engineering or a related subject.
  • The right candidate will have proven in-depth knowledge of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), and lightning protection techniques, and will have the self-motivation to continue to develop their own skills and knowledge.
  • Knowledge of EMC test methods and standards, and experience in developing procedures and test plans.
  • Must be able to demonstrate experience investigating Electromagnetic Interference and RF susceptibilities, and resolving issues to circuit and component level.
  • The candidate will have experience in developing and implementing EMC design and test strategies. Experience related to product design for EMC is essential.
  • Must be hands-on, flexible and practical, with experience of concurrent engineering and designing for manufacture.
  • Experience of accurate planning and costing, with demonstrated success in achieving and exceeding internal and external customer milestones.
  • Be driven to improve design techniques and processes.
  • A quick learner, able to master new tools effectively with consequent improvement in productivity at both a personal and team level.
  • Able to work with minimum supervision with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
  • The EMC Engineer must be available to support qualification programs on site at Cheltenham, as well as at external test houses, in the UK and abroad, and must have the flexibility to work extended hours when required.
  • The EMC Engineer must be willing to participate in military product work, and UK security clearance is essential. The candidate will be capable of ensuring export control requirements are strictly adhered to.

Desired Characteristics:

  • The EMC Engineer will ideally have a background in Electronics design, and will have the ability to comprehend the function of electronic circuit designs and to fault find functional problems.
  • Knowledge of power supply design would be advantageous, and an understanding of signal integrity design techniques.
  • Knowledge of aerospace EMC standards would be beneficial, but is not essential.

Successful applicants will be required to obtain UK MOD security clearance prior to appointment.
