JOB TITLE/Reference #: #075 Web Designer

Duration of Assignment: 3 month plus a possible 3 month extension

Position: Contract

Assignment and duties

  • Works with directorate stakeholders and web information architect to create the design of web pages/templates to meet the needs or functions that the web page must have
  • Excellent in working with graphics software, like Photoshop, programs, which can animate graphics and experience working with a variety of media programs to add sound or film clips to web pages
  • Demonstrates thorough understanding of modern HTML and CSS, along with the ability to craft functional Web pages using quality (standards-compliant) mark-up and CSS-written without the aid of a design view or visual editing tool
  • A thorough understanding of how JavaScript, Flash, and other dynamic media impact user experience and how they work and play with HTML, and CSS and understand how they fit into and work with your own work
  • Knowledge and use of Scripting languages to be able to write/debug scripts
  • Communicates design ideas and describe the reasoning behind decisions based on constraints and relevant context both verbally and through written correspondence and presentations to various levels of audience
  • Demonstrates competence in solid understanding of web design through specific capabilities such as:
    o line, form, texture, contrast, balance, harmony, color theory, etc and knowledge of how these elements affect the human psyche, and why
    o typographic fundamentals for idea and theme communication knowledge of various legibility issues;
    o ability to sketch out any idea in a clear and communicative manner
    o understanding of common Web usability issues
  • Understanding of differences between the various operating systems and modern and older browsers-and how web experiences differ on these different browsers and operating systems
  • Understanding of common accessibility issues and challenges for website visitors - know how to mitigate these issues and design for visitors using various assistive technologies
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of what's going on in the web world- technological trends and innovations, popular websites and applications

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Worked extensively for 5+ years in large complex web site design projects.
  • Demonstrated government experience in addressing web design needs; ability to drive user needs into both creative and pragmatic design solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience in the application of user-centered concepts and interaction design best practices in web sites.
  • Demonstrated strong artistic and graphic design skills for web sites.
  • Demonstrated extensive experience to develop web site visual mock-ups, HTML prototype, storyboards and style guides.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of clean and intuitive form design and working with content management systems.
  • Knowledge of typography.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Post-secondary education in Web, graphic, or visual design or the approved equivalent combination of education and experience.

Technical Capabilities:

  • Advanced working knowledge of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Dynamic Hypertext Markup Language (DHTML), Extensible Markup Language (XML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), popular web plug-ins, and web site authoring tools.
  • Solid knowledge of JavaScript, AJAX, FLASH and mobile web sites and apps.
  • Knowledge of multimedia (video and audio) content editing and publishing to the web.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Solid understanding of the capabilities and constraints of different web browser types and knowledge of resolving style issues across different web browsers.
  • Knowledge of AODA (Accessibility) standards associated with web site development and WCAG 2.0 guidelines in web site design.
