The Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew are seeking a Commercial Manager with proven experience of on-site construction management on large, complex building projects, preferably with significant heritage restoration work within its scope. Projects should be in excess of £30M and the experience should have been over a minimum period of 10 years, with more than 3 projects over £10M as a minimum

The role is critical to ensure best value for money is achieved and the performance of the contracted Programme Manager on this project which is valued at £33M, is achieved. This post ensures the funder's best interests are being served and that the appropriate cost controls and commercial challenges are applied. We are looking for someone who has experience of managing cost management on major projects, a track record in delivering value for money, ideally involving heritage work and on project spanning several years; a professional (member of RICS and Quantity Surveyor); excellent negotiating and influencing skills; ability to work and deliver under pressure and build and develop working relationships with varied stakeholders.

It is desirable that you have experience of procuring maintenance/FM contracts involving European tendering. Also where the agreements have looked to be secured on a partnership basis, where risks and rewards have been shared between the client and the contractor. You will have experience of using mediation and adjudication in applications of resolving building contracts disputes and Negotiation skills, using logic and reason to persuade and influence others to find the solutions that everyone will accept. You will works co-operatively with customers/stakeholders and contractors, maintaining regular, consistent and clear communications to produce innovative solutions and will treats all contractors (potential and incumbent) equitably and ethically. You will understand the economics of construction and how to plan financially and manage a budget and will make use of knowledge of construction contract practice and construction technology & environmental services to provide effective support to the Estates department. The ideal candidate will keep abreast of the latest changes and development in all aspects of QS and applies knowledge to ensure a continuing cost-effective service.
