Description

Next Ventures is Urgently looking for a Workstation Change Manager for a 1 year role based in the Netherlands

Project Description

Background:

While most office PCs are on the Group standard Operating Systems (OS) - Windows Vista and Windows 7, and most Legacy Wintel and Linux Servers are being virtualized through Transformation program with T-Systems, in P&T research labs, however, most PCs and Servers (lab workstations) used to control lab instruments, are on variety of non-standard hardware and OS. These non-GI lab Workstation OS ranges from MAC and different versions of Windows - NT/95/98/ME/W2K/W2K3/W2k8/XP/Vista/7, to different flavors of linux and unix. Likewise, lab hardware also has a wide diversity as well.

Additional complexity arises - some of these lab workstations are stand-alone, while others are on networks with or without Firewall protection; some are supported either locally or by third party vendors, while others such as current EZChrom 3.x running on Windows XP are no longer supported by vendors.

Due to the diversity of lab workstations, issues such as lack of periodic security patch and anti-virus updates, unprotected research data sharing, insecure communications protocols, and inconsistent and non-standard data backup have become IRM compliance problems.
To find flexible solutions that both satisfy researchers in labs - for them to continue operating the existing instruments, and meet IRM requirements, the Group architects recommended virtualizing lab workstations.

Although T-Systems offers consolidated server virtualization as a standard offering through 3 global data centers (GDC at HOUIC, AMS, and CBJ) and a few established Remote Site Services (RSS) using site computing facilities, virtualizing workstations is not a standard T-Systems offering either through GDC or RSS.

In 2011, P&T BIM has conducted a lab Workstation virtualization proof of concept (PoC). The PoC objective was to virtualize selective lab workstations to validate the architects recommendation. 17 hosts have been set up locally at selective labs and 28 lab workstations have been tested successfully.

The PoC has proved that lab Workstation virtualization works, locally. In theory, the same concept should work in GDC or RSS as well. Therefore, the next step is to work with ITS and T-Systems to develop a new service - lab Workstation virtualization via GDC and RSS.

Business Need
In the current P&T lab environment, there is a large diversity in hardware and software and no standard and secure way of data transfer and sharing between lab and office domain. This has led to a situation that support has been arranged on an inconsistent basis and that safeguarding research data is not always in line with IRM requirements.

P&T Lab Workstation Virtualization Project is needed to rationalize, standardize, and virtualize ~1800 lab workstations located in several places around the world (NL, US, DE, UK, Bangalore, and later on Shanghai) to reduce Workstation variety, secure research data transfer and sharing, and ensure consistent data backup - to align with IRM requirements, the Group standardization policies, and IT Master Plan for laboratories

Roles and Responsibilities:

Create and manage communications/engagement plans
Create Lab Virtualization project success stories, and publish them and project updates on P&T Sharepoint site
Create Lab Virtualization selling package (Questionnaire, process flow, big rules, various PPTs, ...), and consistent messages for all P&T lab locations such as US, NL, IN, DE, etc.
Participate team and customer meetings
