Software developer supporting prototype/research development

Description:

We are seeking a driven open source software developer to support prototype development for testing and demonstrating of challenging research concepts in the areas of long term digital preservation and cloud computing (SOA/IoS/SaaS architectures).

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with an experienced team from two world leading ICT companies on cutting edge research in the area of cloud computing.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • BSc/MSc/MEng/BTech in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related subjects.
  • PhD in Computer Science or related subjects (or 3+ years relevant industrial experience is also considered).
  • Recent experience in software engineering, object-oriented design and development with a good understanding of software engineering principles and UML based design
  • Track record of open source (user-space and Kernel-space) development with a GNU/Unix background.
  • Development/integration experience with OpenStack deployments and/or other open source virtualization (Xen, KVM) and storage manageability tools including backup tools, P2V, V2V, inventory tools.
  • Experience working with large data sets in virtual environments.
  • Experience of networking/services, interfacing, test driven development.
  • Research track record and/or innovative industry record.

In addition to strong technical skills, you must possess these soft skills:

  • Application of the latest technologies to create prototypes and pilot demonstrations at a professional standard.
  • Have a high tolerance for ambiguity - able to start down a path, even before it is completely defined
  • Self motivated with ability to work independently within a complex project environment.
  • Flexible working style and strong team skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills in English.
  • Willing to undertake international travel.
  • An ability to meet shifting deadlines and project priorities
  • Work with the researchers, developers and project managers internally and externally to develop solutions/requirements as part of a geographically dispersed, multicultural collaborative team.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with enterprise risk management (ERM) and Business continuity planning. Appreciation for constraint systems, such as legal frameworks.
  • Standards development experience; ability to learn, apply and extend virtualization, storage, context and metadata standards (PREMIS, SIRF, OCCI, CDMI, RDF, OWL).
  • Business intelligence/acumen. Understanding of business process workflows standards, architecture models, tools and frameworks (BPEL, BPMN, Taverna, Apache ODE). Ability to describe/understand the potential business value deriving from conceptual/prototype research.
  • Architecture specification and development methods (TOGAF, Zachman, formalisms and ontology development, etc).
