Description of Duties:
The candidate will be a member of a four person team charged with system administration of central Linux and Solaris Servers. The operating environment consists of 180 Servers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Scientific Linux, and Solaris supporting enterprise services such as authentication, web, collaboration, financials, and payroll and scientific services including experiment Oracle and Postgres databases. Typical day-to-day activities include system builds and upgrades, software installation, executing change controls, system troubleshooting, ticket queue management, application administrator support, and responding to monitoring alerts.

Responsibilities include:
-System capacity planning, sizing, monitoring, and forecasting
-Server design, acquisition, assembly, and operation
-Server architecture design and implementation
-Design and implementation of server operation standards
-Application development and project team systems support
-Maintaining system currency and operations (patching, updates, upgrades, log trimming, system tuning)
-Operational automation and efficiency improvements
-Systems architecture & design
-Preparation and documentation of system maintenance procedures and policies
-Maintaining systems to established computer security standards
-Regular off hours pager rotation and problem resolution
-Occasional off hours project work for system upgrades and implementations
-Training and knowledge transfer to staff in technical areas to grow team members
-Planning and execution of projects in accordance with formal change and configuration management procedures
-Design and implementation of operations processes conforming to the ITIL framework
-Creation of written and verbal communications for management, peers, and customers including deliverables such as project status reports, technical documentation, and strategic presentations

Requirements include:
-Minimum of 8 years professional experience in UNIX/Linux system administration
-Minimum of 5 years recent experience supporting UNIX or Linux production systems in an enterprise IT environment
-Minimum of 5 years Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system administration experience (RHCE certification on v5 or v6 is preferred)
-Excellent communication and customer interaction skills
-Strong Shell script programming skills with bash Shell - python knowledge a plus
-Experience working on complex system administration projects such as major system implementations or new system deployments
-Experience supporting mission critical information systems in a production environment
-Experience with formal configuration management and change control processes (experience in an ITIL environment preferred)
-Experience with operating system hardening and secure configuration
-Must be comfortable working in a dynamic, fluid environment and able to balance multiple projects and priorities
-Solaris operating system administration experience on SPARC systems preferred - 2+ years experience on Solaris 10 preferred
-Experience with puppet open source configuration management tool desirable
-Experience implementing and operating open source monitoring infrastructure (such as Zabbix or Nagios)
-Experience with migrating and operating Servers on VMWare vSphere virtualization preferred
-Experience configuring and supporting Oracle database Servers preferred
-Experience with HP Proliant, Dell PowerEdge, and Solaris SPARC server hardware preferred
-Experience configuring and operating Red Hat Network Satellite server desired
-Experience in Linux/Solaris system performance monitoring and tuning desired
