Senior Mechanical Systems Engineer required to provide specialist technical mechanical systems support, advice, management and leadership and be responsible for the safe and effective conduct of specific test and evaluation tasks, of associated aircraft systems (primarily heavy aircraft type) and associated role equipment, meeting customer requirements, and in accordance with local work instructions, policies and procedures.

The successful candidate will have knowledge and understanding of Aircraft Systems and general aircraft operation, sound knowledge in the Mechanical Systems Specialist Technical area, technical experience throughout the air vehicle life cycle and the ability to make sound technical judgements in the Mechanical Systems specialist area.

Desirable Experience:

  • Knowledge and understanding of Military Aircraft Systems and general aircraft operation
  • Knowledge and previous experience with, depending on position employed for:
  • Heavy aircraft (eg C-130, A400, VC10)
  • Helicopters (eg Merlin, Chinook)
  • Combat Air (eg Typhoon, Tornado or similar)
  • A sound understanding of evaluation and test methodology
  • Customer interface experience in an Aerospace organisation
  • Supplier interface experience in an Aerospace organisation
  • Sound knowledge of Technical Governance
  • Accountability for authorising Specialist Technical input to aircraft safety

Essential Qualifications/Skills:

  • Minimum of an ONC or similar qualification in Mechanical/Aeronautical Engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • Computer literate
  • Team Player offering guidance and help to others to help inform decisions
  • Flexibility
  • Good communication, influencing, interpersonal and people management skills, and demonstrates ability to engage with stakeholders across the wider business; the job holder must be able to communicate clearly and unambiguously with customers and staff and check understanding
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety, Environment and Quality policies and Procedures

Ideally would have:

  • HNC/HND or Degree in Mechanical/Aeronautical Engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • Proven Technical Leadership to team/project members, and/or task Technical Manager
  • A sound understanding of QinetiQ processes, Evalu8, RTS, etc.
  • A knowledge of risk assessment and risk management techniques
