Our client is looking for a contract PLC controls Engineer, to be based mainly at their Whetstone office. Some travel may be required to our client's site in Heathrow, Gatwick, Edinburgh and overseas. Our client is offering an hourly rate of £30 p/h

The PLC Controls Engineers is required to work in the Airport Projects Engineering team which produces state of the art plant control and IT systems for baggage handling applications at the UK's largest airports. Some knowledge or previous experience would be desirable.

Main Duties

  • Development and maintenance of PLC software for plant control.
  • Ability to follow design quality procedures in an auditable manner.
  • Electrical engineering for power distribution and control
  • Liaison with the CAD Designers
  • Generation of specifications at all levels
  • Programming in high level languages
  • Interfacing of control systems
  • Liaison at all levels with customers and other project partners.
  • Testing and commissioning at the customers' site and sub-contractors
  • Engineering Team leadership
  • Cost control and reporting
  • Project Engineering of smaller to moderate sized projects
  • Contribute to the generation of the overall and detailed project programme, including considerations for phased implementation and handover.

To be successful, you must hold all of the below essential skills

  • Be qualified to at least HNC level in an appropriate subject and with a minimum of three years relevant experience.
  • Have a good knowledge and understanding of PLC software for plant control and experience of producing software for Schneider (Modicon) and/or Siemens S7 PLCs.
  • Have a good knowledge and understanding of electrical engineering for medium and low voltage power distribution, instrumentation and related cabling, panel design for motor starters and PLC systems etc.
  • Be capable of demonstrating a structured approach to justifying key engineering decisions.
  • Be able to work under own initiative, be well motivated and enthusiastic, with the ability to communicate with other engineering disciplines within the design/project team. Engineers will be required to interface with the client and other project partners at all levels.
  • Have good personal planning, organisational and analytical skills.
  • Be capable of working to challenging programme and budgetary constraints.
  • Good personal planning and organisational skills.

Desired skills

  • A good degree in electrical/electronic engineering together with chartered status or the potential to acquire chartered status
  • A knowledge of any of the following: -A working knowledge of AutoCad.
    • Other brands of PLC including Rockwell (Allen-Bradley)
    • FactoryLink and InTouch SCADA packages
  • Experience of working to quality assurance systems certified to ISO9001.
  • Experience of complex baggage handling system designs
