Data Centre/Center Technical Specialist
This is a fantastic opportunity to work with a global leader in the Telecommunications Industry. A highly desirable role. This position reports to the Operations Manager.
The Operations Technician's responsibilities include but are not limited to;
- Install all cables, connections and cross connects to data center and customer equipment.
- Installations of Servers and network equipment as directed, including raid, ILO/DRAC configuration.
- Respond to calls from internal groups for hardware or software assistance and problem resolution.
- Maintain and troubleshoot a wide range of client problems in addition to repairing Servers and peripheral equipment.
- Implement systems and software upgrades and OS, configuration changes for users, based on reference system documentation including Windows, Linux & Solaris.
- Maintain a knowledge of building infrastructure (UPS, Generators, HVAC, Electrical components, Security and Surveillance systems, and other facilities maintenance) and Front/Backend connectivity.
- Be able to troubleshoot and repair any Back End connectivity issues. Process access & delivery requests.
- Be able to understand and assist in the planning of the floor and customer layouts. Act as SME (Subject Matter Expert) in all areas of Data Center Operations.
- Responsible for coordinating significant elements of the installation phases as it pertains to the timely turn-up of customer's web hosting Servers.
- Work closely with the operations team to resolve high severity tickets. Manage work requests & interfaces among internal and external organizations to ensure that all parts of the job are completed.
- Manage Site Inventory of cables, power strips etc.
- Assist customers with remote hands tasks when they are at the data centre.
- Travel to other sites may be required.
Experience requirements:
- 4+ years minimum experience in the areas below.
- Basic switch configuration experience, VLAN, subnets, operation & troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with IDF & multi-max panels, CAT 5/7 and fiber-optic cabling uses and implementation.
- Cross-connects and punch downs.
- Basic server configuration skills and installation experience
- Shift work, call out and overnight work may be required.
- A customer focused & pro-active attitude. You will be working within a small team, hence excellent verbal and communications skills are required.
Highly desirable Skills:
- Strong Knowledge of network cabling infrastructure including installation and testing of CAT6, fibre and co-ax cabling.
- Understanding and experience of cable management & best practices within a data centre rack environment.
- Switch configuration experience, VLAN, subnets, operation & troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with IDF & multi-max panels, CAT 5/7 and fiber-optic cabling uses and implementation.
- Cross-connects and punch downs.
- Familiar with workflow systems (preferably Remedy).
- Experience in dealing with end customers in a face-to-face manner and over the phone.
- The individual should be self motivated, able to work under minimal supervision and flexible in their approach towards work.
