Description

Working within the research and development team, the Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the mechanical design and development in projects. The role requires working in a team environment and especially closely with the electronic engineers to integrate electronics and mechanical assemblies in the final product. The use of 3D CAD (Solidworks) is a major part of this role.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
New Product Development
*Working closely with the Electronic to design mechanical parts to interface with the defined PCB technology.
*Agreeing material selection of parts to be used and processes required for outer-coat finish.
*Creating 3D CAD (Solidworks) models of parts and the final product assembly.
*Producing CAD drawings for use in product procurement, continually examining for fit and function including tolerance analysis.
*Checking mechanical drawings to ensure they are dimensioned correctly and to a consistent standard.
*Creating Art-work drawings for back panels, labels etc.
*Creating and updating the BOM checklist fro projects.
*Using their workshop to produce in-house prototype parts for initial feasibility tests, prior to receiving external samples.
*Taking part in DFMEA's and developing/conducting mechanical tests to verify designs.
*Liaise with suppliers to ensure parts are designed to optimise process capabilities
*Working closely with Purchasing, Quality and Production departments during development to ensure all aspects of design for manufacture, procurement and quality are built into the design.
*To assist with the prototype build of each complete system, maintaining continued interaction with production to ensure these meet with manufacturing capabilities.
*To use the PDM system to keep drawing's and 3D models up to date to allow access for other departments.
*Should components arrive that are unfit for production, the designer will be involved in adapting parts to enable them to be used.
*Working to agreed timescales to ensure products are developed in accordance with the project plan.

Manufacturing Interface - Existing Products
In addition to new product R&D, as stated above, this role will also involve continued interaction with manufacturing to troubleshoot production issues on existing products and provide workable solutions.

This will include the maintenance of old drawings in Pro-Engineer and updating drawings as required by the ECR process.
*To maintain and update Change Request and Concession documentation.
*To conduct sample approvals.
*Continued research into new technologies via World Wide Web and Trade Journals.
*Occasionally involved with sourcing packaging materials for new products to ensure accurate fit and stability.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Educated to HND/Degree standard in Mechanical Engineering/Product Design.
Advanced 3D CAD skills. Primary Solidworks, secondary Pro-Engineer would be advantageous. BS8888

Advanced CorelDraw skills
The job-holder should possess a strong technical ability and a keen knowledge of manufacturing processes, with the necessary skills to turn concepts into products for manufacture.

'Hands on' practical skills will be required and experience of using workshop equipment ie: lathes, mills, drills etc..is advantageous.

As the role involves working within a team of dedicated engineers and a constant interaction with all of their internal departments, the job-holder should be a team player and work comfortably within this type of environment.
