Job Description

Purpose of role:

To undertake a defined range of weight control activities in line with all relevant processes and quality requirements, supplying advice and support to operations and other functions and/or to organise and co-ordinate aspects of weight control activity ensuring defined objectives are achieved whilst continually maintaining quality and service requirements.

Key Technical Skills

  • Possesses in-depth knowledge of all aspects within weight control.
  • Able to perform robust analysis using recognised draughting and analytical tools and to make sound judgements based on experience.
  • Has sufficient breadth of knowledge of warship design, basic Naval Architecture and the sound judgement needed to be able make correct trade-off decisions
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting responses in assigned areas to operational units or other activities.

  • Requires good team leadership skills and the ability to show the 'the lead' to other functions of the requirements for precise and rigorous weight control.

Researches when digging for information

Responsibilities

Major Tasks and Activities:

  • Support developing, maintaining and modifying engineering processes and procedures in assigned areas in response to technical developments and operational need.
  • Produce and develop weight information in line with specifications and all quality, cost, schedule and technical requirements,
  • Carry out weight control appraisals in assigned areas to ensure all standards are maintained.
  • Carry out investigations into operational problems, develop and prepare solutions, individually or as a member of the Production Design team
  • To act as focal point for weight control specific tasks ensuring best practices are adopted by providing expertise of own discipline to teams
  • To identify training requirements, skills gaps and development requirements.
  • Support the development of best practice to increase the capability, performance of tools and processes

Additional Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide help and direction to less experienced team members to support effective working and their development.
  • Reviewing and checking of data compiled by Weight Engineers.
  • Processing weight information for Projects using appropriate processes and tools.
  • Calculating weights and centres information
  • Checking of SC, ECR's and impact on weight.
  • Manage assigned budgets and lead, develop and motivate assigned employees to ensure they are aware of and capable of delivering their accountabilities.
  • Make engineering decisions within own sphere of responsibility and delegated authority.

Qualifications:

  • Typically HNC/HND qualified, as there is no Weight qualification a minimum of 5 years experience is required.
  • Meet the requirements for registration As Incorporated Engineer with the Engineering Council and preferably be a member of a relevant Professional Body
