Our client holds purpose and projects across a vast county; they have currently taken on many large projects to expand within their county of Essex's and now require an Environmental Health Practitioner to start ASAP on a temporary contract until March 31st 2013 with a view to extend. You will be based within our client's offices in Southend on Sea, Essex and our client is offering a day rate of up to £154 max. You will also be required to obtain a CRB check.

The successful candidate will be customer focused and will hold recent experience with enforcing housing legislation. You will be determined and passionate in making improvements in areas where standards are not met. You will report to the private sector housing manager to undertake housing health and safety rating system assessment inspections across the borough which holds a high percentage of properties in the private rented sector.

Responsibilities

  • Holding up to date knowledge to give advice to clients and members of the public
  • Conducting detailed inspections and surveys
  • Enforcing action where necessary in relation to the relevant housing acts and related legislation
  • Giving up to date advice, guidance and assistance for the repair and improvement of housing through our clients policy
  • Inspecting houses in multiple occupation and securing their compliance with statutory requirements

Essential skills and knowledge required to be successful for the role

Qualified Environmental Health Officer, registered with the CIEH Registration Board or qualified housing surveyor with a recognised relevant qualification in that field (HNC/HND or RICS approved degree or similar)

  • Certified as competent to conduct Health & Safety Rating System surveys/assessments
  • Thorough knowledge of building construction, building deficiencies and their Remedy
  • Knowledge compilation of schedules of works
  • Knowledge building costs, estimating and invoicing (repairs, improvements and adaptations)
  • Knowledge of housing and related legislation
  • Knowledge of enforcement practice, including prosecutions & works in default
  • Knowledge of housing assistance regime & processing
  • Experience of working with the general public
  • Experience of working with property professionals and related organisations/agencies
  • Experience of surveying of residential properties, including compilation of inspection notes, and other related records
  • Experience of administration & processing of applications for grant/loan assistance from inspection through to final payment
  • Experience of working with MS Office software products, particularly MS Word, Excel and databases
  • Experience of schedule preparation & assessment of estimates and costs
  • Experience of preparation, service and enforcement of statutory notices including prosecution and work in default
