Electro-Optic Sensor Scientist

We currently have a requirement for a contract Electro-Optic Sensor Scientist for one of our leading Defence clients based in Wiltshire. You must be eligible and willing to undergo SC Clearance prior to commencing this role.

Main Duties/Responsibilities

  • Enhance biometric and electro-optical sensor capability (specifically standoff imaging and recognition), such as by using appropriate computer modelling and computational algorithms in order to interrogate a number of large data sets, or through understanding and contributing to knowledge of relevant hardware.
  • Support the evaluation of existing hardware and software through laboratory assessment and data analysis.
  • Lead on the delivery of allocated tasks and projects, and provide leadership (eg 2 or 3 people) to those working within those projects.
  • Build links and networks across diverse areas to provide advice and support.
  • Support the Project Manager in ensuring that work is delivered to time, cost and quality;
  • Influence and guide the work of junior members of staff, within the remit of a particular study or task. The Applicant will work as part of a project team to:
  • Help support user requirements capture and build links across the user community.
  • Present work in comprehensive technical reports and presentations to diverse audiences. An applicant must be prepared to travel to other client sites and potentially participate in Trials activities (both National and International). This role has no formal line-management or budgetary responsibilities.

Skills/Experience Required

Essential:

  • The position requires a broad understanding of sensor technologies (especially electro-optical), and the use of modelling software to describe the output of the sensors;
  • Experience of communicating effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders;
  • Ability to build and maintain productive relationships and work across diverse organisations;
  • Experience of effectively leading complex and competing workloads to deliver to required timescales, and working with multiple stakeholders;
  • Understanding of data fusion algorithms to achieve more value from a range of sensor technologies;
  • Experience of handling and managing large data sets in order to determine pattern recognition performance;
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office software (inc. Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook);
  • Procedural programming skills;
  • Knowledge of programming skills for imagery enhancement, pattern recognition systems, data manipulation and computer based classifiers,

Desirable:

  • Basic understanding of biometrics (Standoff imaging and recognition), matching principles and their utility in Defence and Security;
  • Experience using open source programming libraries such as OpenCV, OpenGL and Point Cloud Library (PCL);
  • Some knowledge of modelling using programming languages/environments - for example could include MATLAB, SIMUL8, Xpress MP, SQL, VBA, MOOD;
  • Experience in computer languages such as C, C++, C# or IDL;
  • Familiarity with Systems Engineering tools and techniques;

Formal Qualifications Required

Essential: First or Upper Second degree or equivalent experience in physics, electronic engineering, computer science or analytical discipline, OR, relevant military experience and knowledge of existing capabilities.
