Description

The Power Trader is part of a team responsible for minimizing the net cost of serving the Company's electric load. The Power Trader accomplishes this by optimizing value of Company assets (load, generation, Financial Transmission Rights, and other financial instruments) in the MISO Day Ahead and Real Time Energy and Ancillary Services Markets. (The MISO Markets are bid/offer-based markets using security constrained economic dispatch to produce location-specific marginal prices for every generator and load point in their respective market footprints.)

Responsibilities
  • Monitors Real Time conditions, collects and assesses data and information from generator operations personnel, adjusts generation resource offer parameters, and dispatches the Company's generation resources.
  • Forecasts load using load forecasting tools, history, and experience, and may create demand bids for each of the Company's load zones.
  • Evaluates load management assets and executes strategies which utilize these assets in conjunction with the Company's generation assets in order to minimize the cost to reliably serve load.
  • Ensures that NERC, MISO, and Independent Market Monitor criteria and requirements are satisfied at all times.
SKILLS
A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Economics, Computer Science, or a related field is required. A significant level of experience (5 years) along with demonstrated knowledge and effectiveness in related generation, bulk electric system or wholesale electric market operations may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement. NERC Operator Certification or the ability to obtain certification within six months is required. PJM Generator System Operator Certification or the ability to obtain certification within twelve months is also required.

Must have strong analytical and computer skills (eg, EMS, Excel, web-based applications). Knowledge of the regional transmission system, LMP markets, and/or regional generation resources is preferred. Significant experience/knowledge of energy trading, financial trading and/or generation systems is desirable. Must enjoy a fast-paced, continuously changing work environment and have the ability to deal with stressful situations in an effective way and make quick decisions based on limited information.
