Key Tasks Mechanical Engineering Tasks
*Working within the Opto-Mechanical systems team and with optical, electronic and Systems Engineers to develop working designs for optical systems.
*Opto-mechanical system design from initial concept to detailed final design using 3D CAD modelling tools.
Analysis Tasks
*Undertake structural and thermal FE analysis at component and system level.
*Perform FE dynamic analysis of Opto-mechanical systems.
*Perform lens thermo-elastic alignment analysis
*Develop the companies understanding of structural response and thermal design.
*Build finite element models of mechanical components and optical instrument
General Tasks
*Maintain a design/analysis log, summarising each step in the design/analysis, development & test process
*Documenting and implementing design changes using Engineering Change Notices (ECN)
*Validating numerical analyses using benchmarks with analytical solutions
*Reviewing proposed designs ensuring that they are structurally "fit for purpose"
*Supporting vibration testing and instrumentation of test units
*Undertaking some mechanical and optical assembly work.
PERSON SPECIFICATION (essential requirements)
Qualifications
*A good degree in Mechanical Engineering (or Similar)
Experience Relevant experience in some or all of the following areas is essential:
*Proven and relevant experience, preferably in the space industry although this is not essential.
*Mounting optical components, lenses, mirrors, prisms, filters, detectors etc, kinematic mounting principles
*Materials and manufacturing processes
*Precision engineering in harsh environments
*Mechanical design using 3D CAD
*FE analysis
*Report writing
Knowledge & Skills Relevant knowledge and skills in some or all of the following areas is essential:
*Excellent analytical skills
*Competent user of leading FEA package (Patran/Nastran/ANSYS or similar)
*Competent use of CAD (SolidWorks or Similar)
*A good understanding of the principles of FEA
*Confidence to solve stress, kinematics, vibration and thermal analysis problems from first principles and the ability to grasp new technical concepts quickly.
*Competent in MS Office suite
*High attention to detail ensuring that the finished sub-systems will function as designed
*Good management, people and presentation skills
*High level of competence in structural design and analysis
*Good team working and communication skills
*Ability to plan and manage own work.
