Description

Purpose

Mechanical designer to be part of a dedicated new product development team set up to develop new products and machine enhancements for the HayssenSandiacre VFFS and HFFS range of packaging machinery.
The full NPD team is based in the UK, USA and Italy.

Responsibilities

Produce designs that are fit for purpose, accurate and produced in a timely manner.
Produce detailed manufacturing drawings that comply with HS drawing standards and any other engineering standards that apply at the time.
To be aware of and comply with all engineering procedures and protocols in force at the time.
To produce designs and manufacturing drawings using Solid Works 3D CAD package.
Produce mechanical parts assembly lists for all sub-assemblies as required for machine documentation

Produce designs which meet the requirements set out in the project scope and as instructed by the lead designer or project manager

Reverse engineer components and assemblies from existing machinery if required.

Work closely with the global supply chain and production engineering teams to produce designs that meet the requirements of the chosen supplier base and are economical to produce
To create new parts and BOMs in the Infor XA ERP system, including inputting all relevant data for that part as required at the time.
To liaise/support other personnel across HayssenSandiacre during manufacture, assembly, test and commissioning, to ensure designs/details progress smoothly from engineering to working machinery.
To be aware of & comply with current H&S legislation regarding office/factory based working & when undertaking any design/detail work.
Undertake any other duties appropriate to your skill levels from time to time, to meet the needs of the business

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Qualified with a mechanical/design engineering degree or equivalent.
At least 3 years experience in a design role for capital equipment in the packaging or similar industries.

Non-degree qualifications with relevant industrial experience will be considered.

Must be proficient in using Solid Works - minimum of 2 years normally required.

Articulate and excellent verbal and in written skills

Responsive and able to work in a dynamic environment and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

Commercially aware of the expected cost of all items as they are being designed - including both bought-out parts and manufactured parts.

High level of attention to detail is very desirable.

Design experience in some of the following areas will be essential:-
a. Hygienic design
b. Fabrications - sheet metal and medium weight parts
c. Castings - generally light weight
d. Belt/chain transmissions
e. Machinery guarding
f. Modular assembly design
g. Ergonomics.
h. Heated sealing assemblies

Experience designing for a global supply chain would be advantageous and experience designing for an outsourced supply chain is essential.

Experience in DFMA, value engineering, and designing to a target cost would be advantageous.

Experience of the practical operation of packaging machinery and systems in customers' factories would be advantageous - ideally VFFS and HFFS machinery.
