Progressive are urgently seeking a talented MySQL/MariaDB Database Administrator for one of the world's leading publishing organisations.

This will be a 12 month contract and paying between £400 and £450 per day.

Day to Day Responsibilities


  • Perform analysis, diagnosis and resolution of complex server and application-based problems that relate to MySQL/MariaDB


  • Recommend and execute modifications to systems to improve maintainability, reliability and performance


  • Design and develop MySQL/MariaDB database architectures and new technologies


  • Support development and implementation of applications


  • Design and implement HA systems and backup policies for disaster recovery


  • Monitor availability and capacity thresholds


  • Implement MySQL/MariaDB roadmaps to ensure support contract currency and counter security threats


  • Maintain systems' documentation for knowledge sharing purposes


  • Provide out-of-hours support on a rota basis


Must Haves:


  • Proven commercial experience as a MySQL/MariaDB DBA (MySQL 5.0 /MariaDB 5.5)


  • MySQL accreditation


  • Experience of installing, configuring and maintaining database infrastructure


  • Proven analytical and problem solving skills


  • Proactive approach to support


  • Proven knowledge and experience of MySQL/MariaDB replication


  • Expertise in database performance analysis and tuning


  • Familiarity with Unix operating systems and standard tools


  • Knowledge of applying enterprise monitoring solutions


  • Ability to work in a collaborative project team oriented environment


  • Excellent communication skills


Nice to have:


  • Proven commercial experience as a MySQL DBA (MySQL 5.1 and/or MySQL 5.5)


  • Familiarity with Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server or PostgreSQL


  • Know-how of Wintel operating systems and standard tools


  • Capability of SQL code tuning and optimisation


  • Awareness of Agile project methodology


  • Experience of server consolidation or migration


  • Knowledge of revision control and release deployment tools


  • Business facing experience


  • Appreciation of ITIL practices
