Description
Optical Systems Engineer required to ensure the technical integrity, coherence and consistency of specific optical system solutions developed and delivered by the Optical Systems Group. This role will encompass all phases of the evolution of optical instrumentation development.
This will include the following elements:
Optical Systems Design.
Optical Systems AIT & AIV.
Integration at System level.
Key Tasks:
Development of space-borne optical systems within a multidisciplinary team to perform optical instrument system design.
Design and development of optical systems from concept through to manufacture and system integration.
Define, prepare and maintain technical requirements specifications for optical payload systems.
Participation in some or all of the following:
Optical system requirements trade analysis.
Optical system architecture definition.
Optical design.
Performance evaluation and testing.
Subsystem and component specification definition.
Subsystem and component manufacture oversight.
Optical system alignment and testing.
Provide the technical point of contact for the relevant optical system(s).
Define and manage the programmatic and technical aspects of work packages relevant to area of expertise.
The successful candidate will have the below skills:
Ideally Degree qualified in a relevant subject.
Basic Opto-Mechanical knowledge to aid in optical system development.
Optical design experience with proficiency in Zemax is desirable.
Knowledge of stray light analysis software (eg FRED) and of SolidWorks 2009 or 2010 is advantageous.
Comprehensive knowledge of Optical Engineering, coupled with a working knowledge of the other engineering disciplines eg electronics, electro-optical device physics and opto-mechanics.
Extensive knowledge in materials and component selection, in the space domain is preferred.
'End to end' Optical Engineering knowledge and experience including one or more of the following:
Requirements Engineering and Trade offs.
Electro-Opto-mechanical Design and Analysis.
Integration of Optical Systems (preferably including Space Systems).
Validation and Verification, including testing.
The ability to review and critique optical systems for application in space, balancing technical requirements with programmatic and budget constraints.
Knowledge of Quality Management mechanisms, experience with MRB processes, failure reviews and investigations is preferred but not essential.
Good team player; able to work in a close-knit teams with design, analysis, integration and test engineers.
Good communication and inter-personal skills.
