OPPORTUNITY:

We're looking for a Medical Records Coder to support a 3+ month contract. RHIT or RHIA certification is required. Coders must have outpatient CPT procedure and infusion entry coding experience. Coders will help with outpatient surgery coding, which requires ICD-9 diagnosis and CPT procedure codes. Responsibilities include coding ICD-9 diagnosis, ICD-9 procedures, and CPT infusion administration charges for Cancer Center patients. Remote work is an option, but onsite training is required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates critical thinking, interpersonal relationship, and technical skill competency.
  • Provides care/service safely and efficiently for each patient.
  • Codes Inpatient charts with ICD-9-CM maintaining an average of 16-18 charts per 8-hour workday as standard performance, 19-above exceptional performance including abstracting charts, and/or, codes Outpatient charts utilizing ICD-9-CM and CPT, maintaining an average of 45-50 charts per 8-hour workday as standard expectations, and 50 above as exceptional performance.
  • Works collaboratively with clinical documentation program to achieve accurate DRG assignment and appropriate mortality and severity scores.
  • Utilizes sequencing techniques to assure proper DRG assignment.
  • Coordinates DRG assignment, which affects hospital reimbursement.
  • Follows departmental standards and procedures when coding and in the assignment of a DRG.
  • Abstracts clinical data accurately for research and benchmarking by the hospital.
  • Maintains prioritized, optimal, workflow through cooperative work distribution (ie, prioritization of charts of discharge date and total charges).
  • Maintains a 95% or greater accuracy rate in coding and DRG assignment.
  • Completes study requests accurately and submits them to appropriate personnel.
  • Completes charts returned from the staff-room on a timely basis to include billing charges, etc.
  • Handles office/customer communications efficiently and courteously.
  • Performs code check on charts. Performs quality improvement review.
  • Performs audits on coding accuracy, DRG assignment, etc., to comply with corporate compliance responsibilities. Maintains coding updates, book, etc.
  • Answers phone requests from ancillary departments and assigns ICD-9-CM and/or CPT codes for medical necessity/Advanced Beneficiary Notice process.
  • Functions with Word, Electronic Medical Record, and Encoder software.
  • Assists in teaching and preparing educational materials for the HIM Program.
  • Prepares materials for presentation at educational team meetings.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate Degree in Health Information Technology or Bachelor Degree in Health Information Technology
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of coding experience (ICD-9 and CPT) and knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Must be an Accredited Record Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
