Description

SQL Server DBA required to join core multi-platform Unix and NT, SQL Server and Sybase DBA team. Providing technical support, involved in writing and installing scripts for database administration tasks, such as backups and capacity monitoring. The candidate should have at least 5 years of MSSQL Server DBA experience (ideally Certified) within a multi-platform environment and large data warehouse environments.

Typical duties will include:

- Providing day-to-day support for the production & development systems and activities in a structured manner.

- Providing production support.

- Providing project support.

- Monitor capacity, integrity and performance of production systems.

- Install new database Servers for Windows, UNIX and Linux environments, understanding the performance and resilience characteristics of the key hardware/software components and be able to follow standard procedures.

- Implement a suitable backup strategy to support an application

- Carry out performance and tuning at database server level and have an understanding of application level issues.

- Maintain monitoring systems to provide 24x7 cover.

- Modify & maintain existing scripts to handle minor changes in infrastructure.

- Be able to reproduce and simplify problems for resolution by vendor technical support, and work with vendor web tools to develop workarounds for problems.

- Understand the implications of undertaking unsafe operations. Understand the impact of those actions, and minimise their risk.

Core technical competences:

5 years or more MS SQLServer DBA experience

Sybase product knowledge

Strong MS SQL product knowledge.

Building severs and databases to global standards

Write technical documents

Unix Shell Scripting

Extensive performance & tuning experience

An understanding of fault-finding database client connectivity

An understanding of database security and auditing

An understanding of network, concurrent access and locking issues.

An understanding of database logging and recovery and how to recover from the various failure scenarios.
