Kickboard is changing the way teachers measure their impact in the classroom.

We've been recognized numerous times as leading innovators in education reform...

(We were formerly known as Drop the Chalk)

..but in our opinion, we've only scratched the surface. We're building a compelling user experience to equip teachers with action-oriented charts, graphs and dashboards, enabling them to make smarter, real-time decisions about what to reteach, who to reteach, and how student behavior affects academic achievement.

And that's where you come in.

We’re looking for a talented User Interface and Experience Engineer to play a meaningful role in building the first-of-its-kind analytics platform for schools. Ideally, you'll start immediately in a part-time capacity, with the opportunity to transition to full-time after successful completion of initial projects. You’ll bring a passion for UI development and responsive design, along with the desire to constantly expand your skills along the way.

The server side application is written in PHP using Zend Framework, with plenty of Javascript, jQuery, and Ajax on the client side. Initially you will be working closely with the Lead Architect to learn our current best practices and expand on them, and our Design Lead to translate detailed mockups into assets and functioning events. We use an iterative, agile development lifecycle and take customer feedback seriously.

Requirements

  • Mastery of HTML5 and CSS3, understanding improvements between CSS2 and CSS3
  • Several years of demonstrable experience working with jQuery, Ajax, and Javascript
  • Familiar with Javascript MVC frameworks (Angular, Ember, Ext)
  • Proven experience building responsive websites
  • Proven experience building event-driven user-interfaces
  • Experience with PHP 5
  • Familiar with PHP RAD frameworks (Zend Framework, CakePHP, Lithium, CodeIgniter, etc)
  • Strong attention to detail and a sense of pride and ownership over the quality of the product.
  • Excellent communication skills
Extras that make you stand-out
  • Familiar with CSS frameworks, SCSS preferred
  • Comfortable with SVN, competent with version control systems in general.
  • Proficient in asynchronous programming
Typical activities of the UI/UX Engineer
  • Gracefully translate detailed mockups into assets and functioning events
  • Build limited scope technical specifications for claimed projects
  • Integrate mockups from design into Zend Framework PHP and HTML viewscripts
  • Integrate asynchronous JSON action handlers from PHP into Javascript
  • Integrate and update CSS responsibly, collaboratively working with Lead Architect to ensure changes cascade without breaking existing UI.
  • Implementing Javascript as necessary from technical specifications.
  • Develop cutting-edge graphs and visualizations for whole child analytics.
What we offer
  • Part-time position with steady work flow (25-30 hrs/week) with opportunity to increase hours and/or transition to salaried full-time role down the line
  • Equally passionate, knowledgeable and supportive peers
  • Team-wide meetings in New Orleans 3x/year (and all the gumbo you can eat)
  • A product that is changing lives and you'll be proud of showing off (your teacher friends will love you!)
  • Full-time positions include competitive salary, generous stock options, flexible work hours, medical/vision/dental, three weeks PTO, and eleven company holidays.
Location
  • Kickboard is based in New Orleans (epicenter of education reform). Ideally, you'll be based here, but we're willing to consider exceptional remote candidates.
