Description

Santa Barbara, CA- Researchers at UCSB have recently completed a groundbreaking study assessing the environmental implications of managing a significant hazardous waste stream. The only problem- the state's legislators, who called for the study, do not have the training to understand our comprehensive but highly technical report, and they are pressed for time. We need you to help us build an interactive web application to communicate our results.

Information is crucial for sustainability decision-making, but the tools for communicating this information with regulators, industry stakeholders, and the public are critically underdeveloped. Help us build a better tool.

We are: a small group of environmental researchers in industrial ecology, offering excellent working conditions and a competitive salary with comprehensive benefits (Health, vision and dental; retirement benefits; 2 vacation days/month plus paid holidays; flexible telecommuting options; campus gym; etc).

You are: skilled in front-end web design and interested in the policy implications of sustainability research. Required skills: HTML/CSS, javascript, jQuery; data visualization using D3.js or similar; ability to write clear, maintainable, open source code; familiarity with user interface design. Experience with ASP.NET and/or C# is desirable.

This is not a code monkey position. You are not a +1 on an in-house dev team.  In this job you will be an army of one: You are the front-end expert, to take a leading role in devising how to present this scientific data to the public.  And you'll do it in a fantastic work environment, browsing imgur from a private office minutes from the beach.

1-year temporary academic position; exempt; some physical presence in Santa Barbara is required (approx. 50% on a monthly basis; negotiable). $50-70k depending on experience.

Apply here by January 17 for top consideration:
