Description
Under general direction, Database Administrator III will be responsible for supporting high performing and highly available database platforms and systems. This includes the use of processes and procedures to create new databases, replicate data across platforms, monitor and manage the databases in production, perform tuning and SQL analysis, provide space estimates, and provide consultation to application development and support teams on design issues.
Dimensions:
Support of selected DB2 or Oracle databases which may hold data and business rules for customer billing, customer service, gas supply, gas management for large volume customers, external and internal web site content, enterprise planning and administration for human and financial resources, capital allocation feasibility, field workforce management, and others

Reports to Manager - Database Administration
No employees report to this position on a permanent basis
Principal Accountabilities:
Perform activities related to the support of database systems in complex, multi-platform environments
Design and implement the physical database components from logical design specifications. Collaborate with Business Analysts, Project Managers, and end users to determine information needs and database requirements. Coordinate with server administrators to configure Servers for DBMS installation and database creation.
Maintain data accessibility, integrity, and recoverability. Monitor the performance of database systems. Resolve performance problems and recover from system outages.
Establish contacts with vendors for software support and problem resolution
Provide guidance to application developers on efficient and effective database access methods, including SQL tuning consultation.
Provide resource estimates and progress reports to Supervisor - Database Administration
Ensure that all work is timely, accurate, and in compliance with departmental or project standards
Provide rotational on-call support for production database systems during working hours and on nights and weekends
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Thorough understanding of the relational database model and solid knowledge of relational database techniques
First-hand prior experience in designing, developing, and supporting large RDBMSs
Extensive experience in logical and physical database design, Datamodelling techniques, and development methodology
Proficiency in the concepts and practice of data normalization techniques
Experience in the design of data extract and migration facilities
Good working knowledge of state-of-the-art database concepts/design/deployment, recovery techniques, performance monitoring and tuning, Structured Query Language, relational database design techniques, and JCL or Scripting languages
Good knowledge and understanding of application development's use of triggers, stored procedures, and packages
Strong customer focus and capabilities in managing user expectations; ability to establish and maintain a high lever of user trust and confidence in the Information Service department's knowledge of and concern for users' business needs
Ability to see the big picture and conceptualize and document creative solutions
Good oral and written communication skills
Ability to present and explain technical information to diverse types of audiences (management, users, vendors, technical staff) in a way that establishes rapport, persuades others, and gains understanding
Ability to write clear proposals and technical documents
Ability to work well individually and as a team member
Education requirements:
Required - Associate Degree or two years college course work in Computer Science or related technical field
Preferred - Bachelor's Degree in MIS, Computer Science, Engineering or related technical field
Two years work experience in information systems development and support with experience in the application of relational database technologies to business processes
