Introduction
The Communication Unit of the Directorate General Justice is in charge of the support of communication actions and development of products (paper and online publications, gadgets, multimedia products) for the whole Directorate General.

Within the framework of these actions, the Unit wishes to use the assistance of an Interface Designer to assist the Communication team and Operational Units with design of publications, factsheets, backdrops, cover pages, brochures, leaflets, web pages.

Description of tasks

  • Assist and supervise the implementation of the EC visual identity.
  • Participate in communication projects to cover all visuals related matters; cooperate with colleagues in the DG as well as with external contractors (printers, copywriters, photographers, other designers ).
  • Advise Units on most appropriate presentation of an idea, thinking creatively to produce new proposals and concepts.
  • Develop design briefs by gathering information and data through research and estimate the time required to complete the work.
  • Conception of a wide variety of document presentations based upon general theme provided by Units
  • Define technical graphic specifications for publications and other communication projects.
  • Advising on most cost-effective method of document production
  • Make illustrations for publications, publicity drives and covers of different works.
  • Design page-layout and prepare ready to print files for publications, posters, internal and external newsletters, banners, and products for conferences, gadgets, postcards, rollups, signage and other communication products.
  • Design of multimedia products: Internet Web pages, interactive media, e-newsletter and other multimedia projects
  • Present finalised ideas and concepts and use innovation to redefine a design brief within the constraints of cost and time
  • Proofread to produce accurate and high-quality work;

Work environment and conditions
The Interface Designer will be working within the communication team. The work will be carried out mainly in the Commission's premises at Brussels. Meetings could take place in Brussels within the European district.

Knowledge and skills
We are looking for one experienced Interface Designer with the capacity to take initiatives where appropriate. He/she must be able to work pro-actively, independently, enjoy endorsing some responsibility, and to find and propose creative solutions to problems.

The candidate must possess a very good knowledge of Publishing and Graphic tools such as:
Quark Xpress, FreeHand and of the different editions of Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, 3D Studio, Acrobat, Director, web graphic tools and Flash. An understanding of the use of CSS and/or XSL for web design is an advantage.

  • A sound knowledge of quality standards for paper and electronic publications as well as photography and illustration and page layout and printing procedures (offset and digital) is required.
  • Languages: English or French compulsory; both English and French an asset
  • The knowledge of publications rules, procedures, process in the Commission and of the Interinstitutional Style Guide (OP) is a strong asset.
  • Capacity to adapt quickly to a new working environment and to work within a team, good interpersonal communication skills, service oriented attitude

A minimum of 6 years of experience is required.
