Description

Incisively is looking for developers to join our team. Want to work on challenging data-focused problems, in a great environment outside of London? Read on.

We’re a small but growing team of Software Engineers, Machine Learning PhDs and Operations Research experts, who are changing the landscape of optimisation and analytics for online companies, using data-driven methods.

We’re looking for really good generalist backend developers, who can (and like to) wear many engineering hats.

As part of the engineering team at Incisively, you will:

  • Design and build scalable services and workflows, to analyse and store huge amounts of analytics data;
  • Create elegant APIs for accessing and manipulating inherently complex systems;
  • Work with cutting-edge machine learning algorithms
  • Optimise our Data Warehouse schema;
  • Use a lot of languages and tools, including: Go, Ruby, vanilla JS, Angular.js, PostgreSQL, AWS and Docker.

We’re currently based on the south coast of the UK, between Southampton and Portsmouth. The office is fantastic, and comes complete with all the mod-cons a startup needs: Spotify jukebox, Xbox, beers in the fridge, and a great view over the Hamble river. While we’re ideally looking for someone who can join us in the office, we are also remote friendly!

You’ll like this role if:

  • You want to escape London, with the option to code by a river with yachts bobbing up and down all day;
  • You crave the excitement and variety of working in an environment where every day is different;
  • You love working with Go and/or Ruby;
  • You like solving engineering problems, considering performance at every step of the way;
  • You have a passion for product and care about the details, wanting to get features right rather than rushing them out of the door;
  • You want to work with smart people on tough problems. We’re not building another social photo-sharing CRUD app

You probably won’t like this role if:

  • You want a clearly-defined 9–5 role that permits you to say “not my job”;
  • You love to indulge in technical gymnastics wherever possible;
  • You think node.js is the answer to writing concurrent, maintainable systems;
  • You think there is one true way to build everything and your favourite framework X is that one true way.
  • You think it’s a good idea to base an Analytics/Data-mining product around MongoDB.

Skills

As a key member of an early-stage, engineering-driven company, you’ll need to be an all-rounder. You will be making decisions that shape the future of our application and, in turn, our company.

As such, you’ll know the following really well:

  • Go, Ruby, Python or C;
  • SQL;
  • Git or Mercurial;
  • TDD;
  • Writing web-services with RESTful APIs.

These aren’t make-or-break, but if you can also do the following well, we really want to hear from you!

  • Writing performant, concurrent systems in Go;
  • Writing sane vanilla Javascript;
  • Angular.js;
  • PostgreSQL;
  • Complex provisioning and deployment (extra points for AWS / Docker);
  • Data Warehousing (we use Amazon Redshift).
