Description

Role: Embedded Software Engineer

Location: Reading

Salary: £55,000

In order to expand my clients development team, they are creating a new UK site in the Thames Valley area, and are searching for experienced and ambitious embedded Software Engineers to join them in this exciting new venture.

The Role:

The engineers are involved in many different activities, and in particular the following:
  • Design and development of system and device driver software for many standard operating systems
  • Porting and testing of the operating systems on new hardware platforms
  • Developing and maintaining our PC BIOS and diagnostics firmware
  • Working with the hardware designers during design to specify the product, and again particularly during the prototyping stage to get the product working. This often involves the development of new special-purpose test software
  • Pre and post-sales backup to the technical support team

Much of the software is written to run on a range of platforms, and often has to work with several different operating systems, so flexibility is an important attribute for the engineers.

Key Skills Required:
  • C or C++ programming, primarily for the Intel 80x86 family
  • Understanding and practical experience of writing software that directly controls the hardware
  • Embedded real-time software development
  • VxWorks, QNX or other real-time operating systems
  • Windows or Linux/Unix device drivers or system (kernel level) software
  • Diagnostics, bootloader or PC BIOS development

You will be part of a small team with a high level of responsibility for your own designs, so you will need to have the ability to work to demanding timescales, and be able to maintain a high level of enthusiasm and commitment to the projects. The role is challenging but the prospects are excellent for capable engineers, as we aim to quickly develop many more new products spanning several platforms.

Benefits:
Very competitive salary package. Company-supported private pension scheme. Non-contributory private medical and health insurance schemes.
