Hi. We're Medic Mobile, a San Francisco based non-profit organization focused on improving healthcare outcomes in developing countries and under-served communities. We build mobile software and hardware that helps to save lives around the world. We're seeking a talented, dedicated, and passionate software developer (US employee or international independent contractor) to join our distributed software development team.

You'll have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge web technologies (including Node.js, Javascript, and HTML 5) on a distributed development team in a results-only work environment.

The Senior Web Application Developer reports directly to Medic Mobile’s Chief Technology Officer, and is responsible for the full development lifecycle of Medic Mobile’s web-based mobile health software.

Medic Mobile recently won the 2014 Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship, and was honored as one of Forbes' "30 Under 30" leading social entrepreneurs.

Skills & Requirements

You:

Have coursework or experience equivalent to an undergraduate computer science, engineering, or mathematics degree.

Are very (or even obsessively) interested in web technologies: HTTP, SSL/TLS, REST, JSON, WebRTC, Canvas, WebGL, HTML 5, IndexedDB, WebSQL, offline applications, cache manifests. You either know these or would like to learn about them.

Are comfortable and productive in a UNIX-like environment: you can script your way out of trouble, and build the software you need from source code if necessary.

Have experience with object/module-oriented Javascript on Node.js and in the browser, or can get up to speed quickly. You'll be able to build and publish an npm module, identify and evaluate appropriate third-party modules, understand common design patterns, and write high-quality asynchronous and/or continuation-driven code.

Understand the basics of database systems, and can become proficient with any one of a wide variety of them — relational, hierarchical, or document-based — without too much trouble.

Have developed, deployed, and maintained production and/or public-facing web applications.

Are passionate about open source software development and open standards.

We carry out this mission with 55 partners in 20 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the US. Our job is to increase coverage for healthcare during pregnancy and childbirth, increase stock availability for essential medicines, protect the vaccine cold chain, increase early detection and treatment for infectious disease, and increase support for remote health workers and families.
