My client, a major international operator, is currently in need of an experienced Operations Geologist for a 28/28 rotation in Angola. This position is for an initial 12 month contract. The operator is Houston based and will cover all travel from North America to Angola.

The successful candidate will have over 5+ years of experience as an Operations Geologist in Deepwater assignments. Angola experience is a plus.

Operations Geologist Position Profile

The Operations Geologist will be responsible for maturing prospects, planning wells, executing geologic operations on drilling wells, and reporting on all aspects of well operations. The Operations Geologist will work closely with the Operations Drill Team in developing well designs and when appropriate, work with government agencies on permitting and approval of well operations. You will also act as the point of contact for all Geoscience matters associated with drilling operations.

Main responsibilities will include:
  • Develop and deliver PDWP (Pre-Drill Well Package) for all proposed wells
  • Interface between operations team and subsurface team
  • Work with Petrophysics, Reservoir and Drilling to develop well specific data acquisition plan to deliver well objectives, to include part or all of the following:


o Logging suites (LWD and/or wireline)

o Geophysical well surveys

o Pressure surveys (MDT, RFT etc)

o Fluid samples

o Cuttings sampling (including biostratigraphic & geochemical subsets)
  • Cost estimation for data acquisition
  • Daily communication/reporting with partners during well operations
  • Risk estimation and risk management plan for data acquisition process
  • Active involvement in operational well planning to ensure the drilling and subsurface objectives are the same
  • Manage third party subsurface vendors - wireline engineers, mud loggers, wellsite geologists and when appropriate, wellsite geophysicists
  • QA on well data obtained
  • In association with Data Managers, ensure all physical samples are appropriately prepared and sent to contractors for further work or storage
  • Daily operational support and forward planning comparing actual data v prognosis
  • Preparation of geological/geophysical End of Well reports
  • Ensure geoscience well reports, composite logs and other electronic and paper data are captured within the company data system (in association with IT Department)
  • Prepare all geoscience surveys and materials required for government approval of well operations

o Exploration Plans

o Approval for Drilling Permits
