Operations Consultant, Redhat Linux, Unix, Linux, Storage and Backup Infrastructure.

Operations Consultant with Redhat Linux to provide effective support within the growing Linux server estate. The initiation of certain key projects will result in the introduction of a large number of Linux systems and therefore there is a requirement for additional resource to manage them.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Effectively utilise management systems to monitor, process and resolve incidents.

Provide operational support across Unix, Linux, Storage and Backup infrastructure.

Implement operational changes in accordance with change, release and configuration procedures.

Ensure that security levels are maintained and policies adhered to.

Carry out system builds to defined build standards and document process effectively.

Effectively maintain patch, firmware and software revisions across the environment.

Monitor and manage the backup environment and accurately report status information to illustrate KPI status.

Also ensure that tape rotation and retention polices are maintained effectively.

Ensure recovery procedures are defined and tested where applicable.

Complete daily checklists to provide management and peers with accurate operational status information.

Evaluate and recommend measures to improve system stability and performance on all supported platforms.

Liase with vendors to ensure internal SLA's are met and vendors are meeting the required standard.

Assist with the maintenance of the CMDB database to maintain accurate support information.

Participate in the evaluation and design of new solutions.

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:

Essential -

Redhat Linux

Ability to work effectively on their own or as part of a team

Excellent reporting and documentation skills.

Change, incident and problem management skills.

Advantage -

Experience of working in R&D environments and knowledge of grid computing.

EMC storage management. Solutions enabler, Unisphere, Control Centre.

AIX, HP-UX and Solaris.

Project management skills.

EXPERIENCE:

Essential -

Five years of experience working within large environments supporting mission critical Unix/Linux systems.

Experience of supporting Unix/Linux systems within in a 24 x 7 environment.

Experience of HP Data protector backup software or similar management tools.

Understanding of network principles and protocols.

Experience in writing high quality technical documentation.

Understanding of storage concepts.

Operational experience within ITIL framework.

Advantage -

Experience of managing EMC and HP storage technology.

HOURS OF WORK:

08:30 - 17:00 (shift pattern may alter). On-call on a 6 week rotation.

SALARY & BENEFITS:

Salary - £38,000 - £43,000

Defined Contribution Pension (employee 4%, employer 8.5%)
